How do I get the aircraft to follow a GPS flight path? Assuming that it is able to because there is a GPS in the cockpit.

Set the NAV/GPS mode to GPS. I have added the default C172 switch to the 727 A/P to be able to do this.
I made the following changes in the panel.cfg for all the models (100/200/100F/200F):

Background_color=0,0,0
size_mm=447,106
position=2
visible=0
ident=10005
gauge00=Captain_Sim.p721.P12!P12_001_ap, 0,0, 427,106
gauge01=Cessna!Nav_GPS_Annunciator, 0,0,20,20
gauge02=Cessna!Nav GPS Switch, 0,20,20,20

Hmmm... I'm seeming to have trouble locating the NAV/GPS switch in the cockpit.. :( where is it at?

My bad. I made a boo boo. The change should look like this:

I left out that 20 in the change to gauge00. I have actually reduced the size of all my 2D Panels, which is why I made the error. If you want to reduce the size of the 2D panels, let me know and I'll show all the changes I made to them.

That's a good question, Otto, but all you have to do is go to your 727 Captain folders in your SimObjects/Airplanes folder and make the changes to the aircraft CFG. I recommend backing-up all of your aircraft cfgs before you edit them.

Hi Otto.

Firstly. As NNewcomb says, backup the original panel.cfg.

Then delete the [Window03] entry and replace it with all of this:

gauge00=Captain_Sim.p721.P12!P12_001_ap, 20,0, 427,106

That's the only change you need to make. It should look like this when done:

when you saved the panel.cfg are you sure you did not save it as panel.cfg.txt as this can be a common problem with vista or windows 7.

Also thanks for posting this Mark as ive just brought the freighter pack so i can use the 727 with Airhauler :)

Thanks for the GPS Fix. � � All is well except for my 100&200 Fs. � Now I have the GPS switch, but no Autopilot panel. I tried the fix twice --still no AP panel. � ?? � Help !!! .

This is not the panel for the 727-100 is it? This is the panel for one of the Expansion Models isn't it? It is the only reason I can think of that would make it disappear.

Try this instead and see if this works.:

The bold text is what needs to be added so that the 727-200/100F/200F have to access the AP in the 727-100\panel folder.

I think this will fix the missing AP problem.

Great. I'm glad we sorted that out.

From now on, I'll have to remember to include instruction for those who want to add that sort of thing to Expansion Models. So in some ways you pointed out something that I had forgotten about. Thanks.

Excellent edit Mark! The GPS/NAV switches next to the a/p look much better there thna underneath as they were before. I have the switches installed as well on my GPS panel,and althought it might look silly,the position make all the difference.

How did 727 pilots navigate in the real world? did they have some lnav or what?

They flew from VOR to VOR, using radio frequencies and magnetic instruments to fly from one to another.

Hi Mark,
So I got the nav/gps switch installed next to the AP but it won't follow a GPS flight path. I loaded a previous flight plan and it showed up on the GPS . I engaged the AP in manual mode and flipped the switch to GPS. So I obviously missed something? Thanks for all your help.

Hi, Brian. You have to switch your autopilot to NAV/LOC also change your Flight director setting to NAV/LOC. Hope this helps!

I'll take Lou's position and jump in here...GPS...Boeing 727...ARE YOU MAD?? Thats liek having sliced break, without slicing it! You can't have a GPS in teh 727, its from different worlds, they don't belong. Go get the 757 if you want a GPS/FMS...

Then why does the CS727 have the 2D GPS in the first place? The 727 can fly an FS Flight Plan, which is used by switching the NAV/GPS Switch to GPS so it can track the flight plan. Good enough reason to fly a GPS plan IMO. ;)

What do you say to those who would really like Captain Sim (in the 727 Captain - it'd be nice if... forum) to retro fit the 727 with an FMC? Just curious.

I don't know if the 727 had a GPS or not. Even if it didn't its fun to use. One can always turn it off if you want to go the traditional route. Same reason I installed one on the 707. And thanks Mark for all your help in installing it.

The Boeing 727 is from the 1960's, and GPS technolgy didn't breakout for aviation until after production ended.

GPS is the way the default FS Flight Planner does its plans. If the 727 can follow it and I can see/follow it in the GPS. I will use it if I want. If I want to fly it VOR to VOR, then I will do that too.

It all comes down to ones preference and how real you want your flight to be. Nobody can force you use the default FS Flight Planner and GPS if you don't want to, so why worry?

I really dislike the FS default GPS. Its such a bad implementation of a "GPS". If you really want to use GPS, I would highly recommend the Reality XP units. A true representation of the GNS430 and 530 with WAAS and LPV approaches. Plus the NAV/GPS switch is right on the unit. Much more up to date as well, has SID's and STAR's, and you can change your flight plan on the fly, or go direct waypoint without wiping everything out. Many developers are starting to allow seemless integration of Reality XP into their aircraft for people that own it.

I've been using either CIVA INS on mine or just VOR/NDB. Sometimes I'll fly VOR/NDB and use the INS to fly an RNAV STAR. I also have the ISG gauges but haven't tried using them because I have FMC on too many other planes.

The default FS GPS has two things in its favor of it over the Reality XP units.

1) It's free.
2) It's much more simple to use.

Reality XP GPS are great and require a bit more time to learn how to get the best out of them. They are not what I would call cheap either.

Very true on the price argument, Mark. The official support over there also is a bit wonky, to put it into the nicest words of mine.
The units itself are very nice though, but don't fit a 727 in my eyes.

727 + INS is the combo I love and can recommend, so close your ears if you don't want to hear it, guys. �:P
It's there, it's free, it works, it's fun and also teaches some stuff while staying at least close to the classic impression the old 727 gives us.

Hi!

I recently bought the 737 and 727

I already made the 737 fully functional. But the 727 is refusing to do so.

I have a freeware 727 2d panel with full functions, but GPS, APP NAV buttons refuse to work. I followed a suggestion for making the AT work.

Also installed a custom AP panel, ignoring the default one. Same with the Nav and APP buttons.

Hello,

First of all, it should be mentioned that the NAV/GPS Mod no longer necessary because in any update (I don't know which exactly) a NAV/GPS Switch is installed right in place of the pneumatic brake in the VC.

@CesarW: Which systems exaclty are not function correctly in your 727? Only the AP? Have you got Cockpit-Sounds (switches)?

Hello,

This should work if the NAV/GPS Switch in the VC is in the NAV-Position and the AP-Knob in the "Auto G/S" Position.

Don't forget to engage this configuration short at the bottom of the GS.

And, of course, ILS-Frequencies have to be entered correctly for the corresponding runway.
