The runway sure looks pretty short for the 707. The angle of the shot makes it a bit hard to tell for sure.

The airport is Unalakleet Alaska (PAUN) its only 5400ft long....trying to land is even worse.

I had a feeling it was somewhere in Alaska. Were you able to land?

Just for fun i tried fully loaded and ran of the ruway into a ditch but thanks to slew i gave it another try after dumbing 95% of the fuel and made a successfull landing in 28kt crosswinds.

And just imagine flying the 707 at the advent of the jet age. Very few runways were long enough to land it. That's why the 727 and 737 are so much smaller.

Okay, Ultimate Alaska X, by FLight1 makes Unalakleet all gravel when it should be paved.

Well, the 737 was for short haul. The 727 was short-to-medium. You know, the man who headed the 747 development (Joe Sutter) holds a patent for the 737 engine placement.  :)

Hey, do you know when the transition from those long, skinny engines to the modern short, fat ones was? I'm guessing some time around when the 747-200 came out, because the 747-100 is the last Boeing I've seen with the long, skinny engines.

It was probably due to the GE CF6-50, it was the first fat one, it was the second engine variant to the 747, used on the DC-10(might be the CF6-80). PW was a while to follow with the A300, Rolls Royce, L1011

You can buy AFX from flight 1 and mod any airport you want. I love the look of the old skinny engines, cant wait for the 737!
