It is related to the end of current leg you are doing. If you open the map (Shift+4) and zoom out, watch the movement of the next leg while you make the changes in distance and direction. It can give you a better idea of where you will finish at the end of the next leg. That's how I work it out.

Just remember that the DNS isn't very accurate, but it IS a lot fun to fly with.
