Title: Old-Style Navigation
Post by boeing247 on Feb 25th, 2011 at 5:49pm
Okay--I've searched everywhere, and surprisingly, there is nothing online that shows you how to utilize the old-style navigation systems on the 707. I'm pretty good with FMC's, but as far as the 707's route guidance systems, I don't know INS from Doppler. Yes, I've read the manuals, and I know what everything does, but not how to use it all together, i.e. put enable Doppler, make autopilot follow the route, etc... Thank you!

If you fl yan IFR flightplan like a real airline, they're always vectoring you, so you just need a heading input

Okay, so you're saying that I just need to turn on heading hold and switch autopilot to NAV?

I'm not incredibly experienced with autopilot. I know how to hold the altitude and control vertical speed to gain or lose altitude, but that's just about it (and that's all I've needed in the past).

Hi boeing247.

Have you read KB #6061? This is an in-depth explanation on flying the 707 using the DNS (by LOU). It's too big for me to add in here for you, although I do believe that it was in in a Topic in this forum as well.

To use heading select, switch the Mode Selector Knob on the AP to HDG. You can't have is set to NAV and HDG, it is one or the other. ;)

Thanks, all! I think I can get it working. Now if I can just stop the plane itself from fouling up... :-/

Although MarkOz simplified it for you, here it is anyways. Yes, you turn teh autopilto onw, with heading hold. It will track the heading you put into the bug....and for altitude you hit altitude hold at your desired alt, or the ATC's requested alt. Or you can trim it up to make it easier hwen changing altitudes often... ;D

How do you enter the desired altitude? I'm used to the number on the dashboard, but obviously on the 707 it's different.

How do you enter the desired altitude?
You can't. You need to climb to the desired altitude then use the ALT switch to hold altitude. This was before the time of the more advanced autopilots.

cool. Thanks. That's what I had been doing.

Then you're on the right track. Good luck, and happy flying. Look forward to my review of the Captain Sim 707 Captain on flightsim.com in the coming weeks :)

That's the only way you could have been doing it. ;)

I tried adding a more advanced AP to the 707 (like the one from the default A321 or B737) to help some others out but it was unsuccessful. Besides. I like the old style flying. With the 757/767 Once I get above 10,000 feet I can go and make a coffee knowing it will continue its climb and navigation with me being there.

And to those members that are thinking of saying "You go for a coffee and leave the cockpit unattended etc....", doesn't mean that I do do that. It just means I could if I wanted to! :P

This is actually easier than the modern AP. Now that I know how, it makes my 767 seem horribly complex.  ;)

Yes, though rudimentry and primitive it is effective and simple. Let's all lok forward to the 707-300C, E-3 and VC-135 (Air Force One) real soon! Happy flying the 707, you'll have a blast.

I'm sure I will. Hey, where'd you get that 747-8i pic? I watched the debut webcast and I think that a picture like that would be a nice addition to my banner. Thanks!

This is a screenshot for an upcoming repaint for the 747-8X by another company. Here's the link...http://forum.avsim.net/topic/327698-another company-747-8-boeing-sunrise-livery/

It will be fun to fly in that Sunrise livery, a very beautfiul plane all around.

Yes! Read the OTHER thread.... ::)

So, here's a question on the DNS:  Are the points in the flight plan calculated relative to the aircraft's current position, or to the last point?  For example...

In the first flight plan, the DNS plots point B (leg A) 50 miles form the plane's current position, along a heading of 340.  Point C is 50 miles from point B, along a heading of 45.

In the second flight plan, the DNS plots point A in the same manner, but point B is plotted 50 miles from the plane's starting location, along a heading of 45.

There are several threads on this already, but they all seem to indicate different behaviors.  Which is it?

It is related to the end of current leg you are doing. If you open the map (Shift+4) and zoom out, watch the movement of the next leg while you make the changes in distance and direction. It can give you a better idea of where you will finish at the end of the next leg. That's how I work it out.

Just remember that the DNS isn't very accurate, but it IS a lot fun to fly with.

Thanks, Markoz.  Maybe laying out the flight in a program like PlanG would help?  IIRC, it gives you the bearing and distance between each leg in the route.

The 707 can fly VOR to VOR, FS Flight Plans, CIVA INS and DNS plans, so there is quite a choice. I'm more into the last three though.

DNS is fun, until you get a few waypoints close together, it gets really hard to get the legs done in time leg. LOL
