Title: Captain 707 Auxiliary altimeter CO1
Post by abo265 on Jan 5th, 2011 at 3:15am
There seems to be a problem with the CO1 auxiliary altimeter. The 10000s indicator needle stays at zero. For example, fly above 10000 fet and compare the two altimeters. The manual also needs some attention on this subject.

Seems to work in my 1.2 installation here. Check both altimeters and their pointers.

Since your screenshot doesn't show any 10.000-Feet Pointer at zero but the one for the Runway Height (No.6 item), I think that you are mixing up the pointers there. The one for the runway height is normal to be seen at zero when flying high.
So, there actually isn't any 10.000ft pointer at all.

I've mixed them up myself before (and thought about the No.6 being a 10.000ft pointer), maybe that's why I see the same behavior on your side. :)

Some remaining bugs of the 1.2 can be found here, feel free to explore or add some items to that list. http://www.captainsim.org/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1287684648/all

abo625,

My stand-by altimeter looks like this:

But in CoolP's example out of the manual for CO1 there is a different look.

In this example my stand-by altimeter is showing 12,600' the same as the Captain's altimeter.

The image in CoolP's manual calls the 10,000 foot needle a runway height indicator???  :o That is not correct!
Also, Kollsman is the correct spelling not Kohlsman as is in the manual.

The skinny line pointer with the triangle shows 10,000 feet when it is pointing at 1.

The fat/short needle with the hash marks on the other side is the 1,000 foot needle. The stripes or hash marks were there to alert the pilot that he was below 10,000 feet. As you would go up in altitude and the 10,000 foot needle would move, and a mask would begin to hide the stripes.

This altimeter indicates 10,180 feet

This one shows 80 feet.

Thanks, Lou, that would explain why I never could figure out how this altimeters "knows" the actual runway height without getting a QFE value or something.

So the manuals should be redone and the function of the 10.000ft pointer should be enabled above 20.000ft or so (it goes to zero then while it seems to work below).

I've edited the post 1.2 bug list and added this point together with your screenshot, Lou. Don't worry, I've copied your shot, so no traffic arises from your page.

That needle on mine only reads the airport (runway) altitude. Once I take off, it drops to zero and doesn't move again until I land. So the way the needle works is as described in the manual.

@Lou. Kollsman? I never knew that. In the Flight Sim Design forums that I frequent, most (if not all) seem to believe it is spelt as Kohlsman. Well I'll be....

Mark, the CO1 in the book is NOT correct. The thin needle with the triangle shows tens of thousands NOT airport altitude.

From Kollsman page...
When set to the local barometric pressure in the Kollsman window, an aircraft pressure altimeter will register altitude above Mean Sea Level (MSL).  The long hand indicates hundreds of feet, the shorter, diamond-shaped hand indicates thousands, and the thinest hand (with the triangular tip) is tens of thousands.

http://www.kollsman.com

The reason as you state above, that the needle drops to zero and doesn't move again, is because something in the CS program is goofy and does not work as it should. Look again at the screen capture I posted above and see that both the Captain's altimeter and the CO1 in my plane are working as they should.

The 10,000 foot pointer will start to show movement as you climb. At 5,000 feet it will show between zero and one. At 8,000 feet it will show one mark short of the one. At 30,000 feet it will point to the 3.

If your having trouble reading this altimeter, it's no wonder! That is why they switched to the drum & pointer altimeter [Captain's] so as to avoid just this problem.

Thank you Lou and CoolP. Hopefully the next update will fix the 10,000 ft. needle.
