Welcome to the forums. :) Can you confirm that your INS/DOPPLER switch is set to INS and that you are running the AP in NAV (not HDG)?
If you INS is properly aligned and working in NAV mode plus has at least one waypoint loaded, it should work.
If you still have trouble, please post a screenshot of the INS unit. Maybe it shows an error code or something which could help. To post screenshots, you can use a free hoster like imageshack.com for example.
