Replacing the new (v2.4) gauges with the old (v2.3) changed nothing. The gauges themselves worked fine, they had no effect on the way the sound behaves.

Version 2.4 (25 Feb 2010) was not very far behind the release of version 2.3 (26 Dec 2009). I do not remember the having the sound not working upon loading in v2.3. Because it was only two months between them, I could be wrong. :-/
