Title: Descent issue?
Post by speck on Sep 12th, 2009 at 1:01pm
Hello Pilots,

I just want to compare my notes with you guys. Last night I was descending from FL30 to FL10. I was carrying about 30% total fuel and the plane's weight was around 26,000lbs. So I started by idling the engines and waiting for the speed to drop to 250kts before I put the plane into a 2000ft/m descent. At 250kts I started going down at 2000ft/m to my astonishment the  air speed dropped to 160kts !!!!! So I pushed the plane further into a descent to 3000ft/m and the speed did not increase.  Did anyone else notice this?

Yes I have that issue also. It seems the throtttle has too much authority over airspeed and the descent angle not enough. In the 727 we reduce thrust to in flight idle and decend at our chosen FPM. If you bring the trhust levers to in flight idle in the CS727 you airspeed will drop unrealistically. It's not very accurate.

But you shouldn't be slowing to 250 kts at FL300. You should start slowing in tiem to pass 10,000' at 250 kts.

It is accurate the 727 is known for falling out of the sky like a sack of bricks when the throttles are pulled to idle. A big thing to remember when on an approach.

I'm current and qualified in the 727 and have over 3000 hours flying the real thing. Do you want really want to argue about it?  ::)
