Title: 777 VOR Nav Radio Range
Post by Pinatubo on Jul 23rd, 2013 at 9:56am
Usually all FS default aircrafts as well as all others CS addons have VOR radio navigation range of about 194 nm, excepting of course, those aids who are low altitude and airport terminal. Curiously,  the 777 has a VOR maximum range near 100 ~ 105 nm.

On the other hand, I like to set my NAV radio frequencies using 'manual mode', mostly in high density navaids areas.

Is there any way to increase 777 VOR radio range?

Thanks,

Pinatubo.

The VOR range is set in the scenery object. You specify the range when you create the VOR so all aircraft should be the same. If a 777 at a particular altitude can see the VOR at 80nm so can a C172 at the same altitude.

With the Captain Sim 777, I'm finding it no different to other aircraft. That's going on the specific VOR's that I know broadcast up to a certain distance using DME.

Maybe if you gave an example of where you are encountering the problem, I can check it out in my FSX.

Mark,

I checked again, flying from YSSY to NZAA. Before take-off I tuned, using 'manual mode', both VOR SY (112.10) as VOR BIK (116.80). After exactly 111 nm from the nav aid, at FL 300, I lost my first radio nav signal (BIK), and after a while, the second one (SY) at the same distance.

Changed to 'auto mode' and although with several VOR stations within range (<194nm) none of them was able to be auto tuned.

I didn't notice a similar problem when using any other CS addon.

Please, give it a try to check if I'm right or not.

Thanks,

Pinatubo.

Edit: Both VOR stations (BIK and SY) are High Altitude category.

You are right, when I manually set the VOR's to ML and SY, that both have a range of 199/200 nm, I lost ML after about 110nm.
In a General Aviation flight (or the CS 737) I will often follow an ML radial until I pick up SY signal and then follow the radial to Sydney. SY comes into range once I am about 195nm from ML, so I know the range of both is about 199/200

I guess there is something wrong in the coding.
