Title: Put it to the test – Real time pilots DO!
Post by Lost in Isaan on Jul 17th, 2013 at 9:59am
Just for the doubters who think this model is no good:-

I created one of the worst scenarios pilots had to deal with: Landing into the old Hong Kong (VHHX) Kai Tak International Airport on runway 13 over the hill and buildings.

I modified the default airport adding ILS and had to give it a glide slope of 5.5 degrees to overfly the obstacles. Don't know if ILS was available and I'm pretty sure, if it was, they had to ADD lots of flight maneuvers/corrections.

There’s no way it would work without setting the speed brake drag to 60 in the *.air file as been mentioned by myself at the V0.2 release and others down the line. Slowing this model down is harder than keeping it flying.

I finished up a little long on landing but had plenty of runway to slow to taxi speed.

Grabbing the glide slope.

5.5 Degrees just makes it!!

Stabilizing.

A bit long – Oh well we made it. This bird is great!

If you want to fly the original approach of VHHX, you can go to the Vatsim Hong Kong Division. All charts and approach procedures are available for free download. And sometimes, if you fly online in network, you can also have ATC for this airport.
Try to do this with captainsim T7. My opinion, it should be possible to fly the approach with CS T7 without AP. The approach is flown by a Localizer DME approach. LLZ/DME Approach. No Glideslope! Or you can fly a VOR/DME Approach or NDB Approach. The glidepath was 3.1°.
The approach chart show, not much corrections needed, only fly to the checkerboard Heading 45° and turn right. All charts can be found at Vatsim Hong Kong.
Can not send a link in this post, just google for Vatsim Hong Kong and you will find it.
Have fun :)

Your approach is flown wrong. You do not fly to the checkerboard, your course is to much left. The hill you see on left of your picture is the hill with the checkerboard. So coming from Kowloon you must fly a heading 45° to the checkerboard and then make a right turn before the hill down to the runway. So the turn ist much more difficult and short. The way you fly the turn on your pictures would not be legal in real world because you are to low and the distance between your left wing and the hill is to close.

Thank you for your comments and the technical information, on viewing some video clips (actual approaches) I see where your coming from. The purpose of the exercise was to demonstrate the models capabilities with a little tweaking, some guys are finding it hard to slow down.

Not a perfect landing, but it is possible with CS777 (NDB, Visual).

Good work and great pics. I'm going to have to do a hardware upgrade soon, as per my signature I'm using a dinosaur (be it a very stable dinosaur). Have to keep my scenery sliders way left to maintain any sort of frame rates when flying the CS B777.  :(

How did you get clean wing????

clean wing? Use the livery from avsim, so do not know it could be dirty. Air China airplanes always clean, good food, good aircondition and nice FA. ;)
