Title: fs9 is mystery ctd or pc crashs
Post by so666 on Jun 18th, 2013 at 5:37pm
Hi all.
just lately my fs9 as become unflyable, and i dont know whats causeing it at this time.
sometimes i get a ctd sometimes the pc just reboots,no warning or error messages show.
i am using fs9.1 on a win xp system with 4gb of ram
disc c is 114gb,disc f is 233gb.
i have spent a month deleting my old flightsim from disc c and reinstalling on disc f which as more free space,as windows and avast updates seem to be using a lot of space on disc c of late, and i only have 50% free space on this disc c.
as anyone else had this problem,in the meantime i will be trying different seasons and inhouse weather as opposed to real weather download every 15 mins which is my normal setting.

no longer a crash to desktop, just crashed and will not come back, hoping its a  power pack thats gone, without damge to rest of pc,fingers crossed.
i had just managed a flight of some 3.5 hours in cs130j from kbfi to paed, when the pc just went to black screen and would not boot backup.
alarm clock also showed signs of a power inturupt, and i had to reset that, but nothing else in the house was effected.

Faulty RAM and PSU (power supply unit) problems can often have similar symptoms. Fortunately, PSU problems are far more often the problem, than faulty RAM.

I hope that it is the PSU at fault, because that is cheaper to fix. ;)

Adding to Mark's comments, if you are comfortable with checking your hardware, check for fans not working, including CPU cooling fans, case cooling fans and power supply fans. Depending on the age of your computer, the power supply may be on the way out. Having said that, there is some free diagnostic software that should check out your hardware, (ram, cpu etc ) which may isolate the problem. Hope this helps.

hi markoz & rservice.
well sofar so good, new more powerfull psu fitted and sofar she seems to be working,to early to say if all is well, but shes booted up i am hoping that was the only problem,so i can get back to flying.
but i have seen on ms web site that all updates and support for xp will end in april next year,so looks like i have to saveup for a more powerfull gaming pc that can run fs9,fsx/xplane10.

I wouldn't worry too much about the "end of support" for WinXP because it's pretty stable these days, so it should be good for a while to come.
Win 7, or Win 8, 64bit would be better because they have the capability of allowing more the 4 GB of RAM, and 8GB seems to make FSX run better. ;)
