Title: ILS landing G/S stays dead
Post by mikaz on Oct 11th, 2012 at 6:58pm
When i try to complete landing with ils the G/S indicator stays dead at the bottom of the screen. And also G/S text stays white, not turning green. And should i have all the AP buttons selected when performing autoland (all ap buttons light illuminated). When i press another one of those ap buttons, the other one goes off. I have tried ils aproach several airports example Helsinki and Turku.

Hello,

When you want to fly an ILS, first you have to make sure you tuned the ILS frequency on the FMC (CDU) by selecting the STAR for your airport and the runway you want to land on. Make sure it's the active flight plan. Or put it in maually in the radio/NAV 1 panel.

When you are withing range of the airport, I guess 15 nm or whatever, press the LOC button on the MCP. Then the AP will track the localizer signal from the runway. When you are close enough you should see the G/S become active on the right, (I usually intercept from below) then press the APP mode selector. The plane will then fly the ILS and the 3 AP selectors will automatically light up (it takes the 3 computers to do an autoland).

I´ve noticed another problem while descending. When i descend let´s say with rate of 1500ft/min, the plane is actually descending closer to 500ft/min. So i have to start descending very early or take very steep dive. Example when i land in Helsinki rw 4r, there is altitude restriction 7000ft and the next one just before final is 3300ft. If i start my descending at the 7000ft and try to get right height at final, i have to descend at rate of 3-4000ft/min. And with that i come to final too fast. I really would like to get this thing working but i start to get frustrated..  :-[

Hi, mikaz.

Can you post a screenshot showing how your panel is set up and how the ILS shows? It's easier to look at that than describing it in text. You can upload pictures here and then post the link. It's free. http://imageshack.us/

Which airport and runway are you using? Maybe we can test the location. Also, is this the default FSX airport or some addon scenery?

When you use a default FSX plane at the same location, does the ILS work then?

Is the altitude constraint /7000B? If it is, it means you need to below 7000 feet, not holding 7000 feet. If it is /7000A, it means you need to be above 7000 feet. The same applies to the /3300B or /3300A. The distance between the 7000 feet restriction and the next one 3300 should allow for a descent between them, of about 1200 (possibly less unless there are hills or such).

I had a look at the STAR PEXE2R and Approach for ILS04R GEDLO and found the following:

PEXEN 289/10000A - 9nm - KUDOP 250/7000A - 13nm - HK813 250/3500A - 5nm - HK811 240/4850 -  3nm - GEDLO 240/3300A - 3nm - BOLSO 240/3300A - 4nm - FI04R 240/2090 - 6nm - RW04R 240/200

In the info above, the bold text means that SPEED or SPEED AND ALTITUDE or ALTITUDE must be adhered to. So except for FI04R, where you MUST be at 2090 feet, the rest must be ABOVE or AT the altitude but not BELOW it, so if you at high, it is okay.
Under this situation, I would aim to be at (or slightly about at worst) 10000 feet when I reach PEXEN, giving 37nm to lose another 7910 feet to be at 2090 feet when you reach FI04R. This is better than the 30nm to lose 10000 feet standard. Besides that, by the time you reach FI04R, the G/S should put you at 2090 feet when you reach it.

Hope this helps.

I made one more notice yesterday, after i wrote message  here. The radio altitude wich shows up at adi display, shows that i`m almost 1000ft higher than what altitude gauge shows me. And visually i have noticed that i´m quite high. That would explain the g/s indicator staying dead, cause i´m flying over it.  I´m going to do some more testing  later on and try to take some shots too.  I installed also my old 737 pic and try to fly exactly same pattern and see whats happening.

In Helsinki i`m using another company´s Helsinki mega scenery, but the problem also shows up default Turku scenery.

I wonder if there is a fault with the scenery then?

You could try reinstalling the 757 (repair) and see if that might fix it.

Well i flew the same pattern with 737 pic without a problem. So the scenery is not the problem and it occured with default scenery also. The biggest problem here seems to be the descent rate. The plane is descending a way lot slower than what descent rate gauge tells me. When i descend with rate of 1200ft/min according to gauge, which is quite normal speed. But it take between two to three minutes to descent 1000ft which is not normal. And i really dont want to make dives, cause it screws my approach speed wise.

I´ve allready re installed it and i have latest version of fsuipc, if it have something to do with it.

I really starting to feel that i should of pick som other 757  >:(

I have never experienced problems with my ILS approaches, nor the majority of the guys here trying to figure your things out, so the CS 757 it's certainly not the problem either.

If you feel like, go ahead and pick some other FSX 757, the truth is it won't be any better than this...

I still think some screenshots would help to see if there was a problem with the plane or the pilot commanded autopilot mode.

He can't post screenshots because he has less than 10 posts. :(

[edit]He can attach an image to his reply. But I didn't know that. :([/edit]

Here´s one shot i took while take off. The alt gauge seems to drag behind pretty badly. This situation appears every configuration. This take off was made on for this foto. So there might be some faulty configs.
This is odd  :o

I figured out something. The radioaltimiter says 1003ft and alt gauge 300ft. 1000ft~300meters. Could that be the problem?

Well the answer is yes and i`m embarrased ::) Now i have complished first succesful flight with this plane, and i think that there going to be few more...  ;)
