Title: TNCM departure problem Post by fuzzy11 on Jan 19th, 2012 at 6:20pm
Last Monday morning, I departed TNCM runway 10 with full load including cargo and 45,000 pounds of fuel to KJFK with the 757-200 Pratts.
I forgot to spool the engines up before departure and ended up in the hill at the end of the runway. I then reloaded the ac and used my USB brakes during spool up, but the plane started to move with the brakes on (is that normal?). At least this time I was aware of the issue and made a slight turn to the right continuing flaps 15 until clearing the hill. Perhaps another question, how do 747s etc.. leave from there? Do they refuel in Miami, Atlanta or NY? |

fuzzy11,
I tried the 757 and a brand-X 747 out of TNCM. I loaded up the 757 - not to full, but almost with a ZFW of 165,000 and 70,000 pounds of fuel. I used flaps 20 with no wind. I took off east and flew straight out over the hill with no problem. I kept V2+10 and takeoff power until out of 3,000 feet. Then I went back and landed and changed to a 747-400 with P&W's as well. Loaded it up for a trip to KJFK with a ZFW of 476,600 and around 94,000 pounds of fuel. The plane did pretty well and climbed straight out over the hill. Even though the runway at TNCM is only around 7,500 feet the 757 should not have a problem even at MGTW. I used to fly the 757-200 out of KSNA non stop to New York with a full load without any problem despite the fact that the runway is only 5,000 feet. We used 20 degrees flap and KSNA was super noise sensitive. Make sure you rotate at 2 degrees per second to around 17 to 20 degrees. Keep V2+10 for best climb. Lou |

The Climb out of TNCM does not proceed directly over the hill either! All aircraft make a right turn off of runway 9 as the climb..I would assume passing between 400 and 700 ft MSL the turn starts.
