Title: 727-100 Static Thrust
Post by BrianG on Sep 15th, 2011 at 6:47am
Does anyone know what  the real thrust was in the 727-100.  My 727 seemed grossly under powered, many time unable to climb above FL300 with 120k TOW. I upped the thrust from 15,500 to 17,400 as I read this was the range in the real life 727. I want to keep the plane true to life as possible and can not verify that 17,400 was the ever even used. Does anyone know the answer to this? BTW, at 17,400 lbs. she handles like a dream.

The original 727-100 static thrust was 15500, as far as I know. I have stuck with that in the -100.

But in the -200, I do use 17400, because it get is much worse than the -100 if I use 15500. :(

Thanks Mark. Did you change the thrust specific fuel consumption or fuel flow gain when you added the additional thrust? It's amazing the difference 1900 lbs. of thrust makes.

Add another zero and you're the first supersonic 727.  :D

Nope. I just increased the thrust. Once I start playing with the fuel consumption, I wreak havoc on the planes performance! ;D

You need to get the Supersonic Concorde out of you head! :D

I can't!  ::)

Looking for an alternative now and a supersonic 727 looks nice.  :D

Now that, I must say, does sound kinda fun! We should try it just for laughs! ;D :D

Awaiting screenshots at 70.000ft.  :D
That thrust should also help a bit on short fields.  8-)

I'm always up for fun and adventure. I'll give it a try and report back, unless my plane disintegrates first.

I tried it with 155,000 lbs of thrust. It's a rocket ship and overspeeds with the throttle on idle when in level flight! I went to 60,000 feet! :D

I remember seeing your memorable flight test. Three turbines Pratt & Whitney JT8D-155000 taking off at Mach 2 and the fuselage and wings of a wrecked B727X, still stopped on the runway, surrounded by fire, smoke and sparks. It was an awesome flight.:o :o :o...or most probable a nightmare!!! ;D ;D ;D

What was really funny when I did the first super flight, was I got so fast (speed) so fast (time) that after I took off I couldn't raise the gear because I was way past the VLO and had wrecked them! There I was at FL500 with my gear still down. I was still flying at 300+KIAS. The next flight was the one I mentioned above! [smiley=evil.gif]

I'll put 155,000 in mine and the next time the Vatsim controllers comment of my lack of climb performance I'll let them have it.   ;)

You might be in for a surprise then. When I set my thrust to 155,000, as soon as I released the parking brake, she started heading off in a big hurry! With my throttles still in the stop position! :D

;D Lol, you guys are nuts!  ;D

While you actually are, does the change also affect the reverse thrust?

Who needs Concorde anyway? Mach 2.18 after less than 10 seconds.

And that was on half throttle with the 737-200 and a little '0' added on the thrust value.

This also gave me a nice VTOL takeoff since the thrust increase pitched the a/c up and the thrust itself then blew it off the ground.
The only downside so far are the "slightly" higher skin temps.  :o

See? A/c design is easy.  ;D Although the fuel burn has gone up too. Maybe I can glide down from 100.000ft.  8-)
Feeling quite lonely up here.  :-/

Up there at around 100.000ft, in my 737-200, I saw this. I think I see the world in an different angle now.  :-[

Never tried reverse thrust. I don't like the idea of trying to peal my face of the windshield!

And you said we were nuts CoolP. You went and did it in the 737-200, which increased the thrust in that aircraft to what? 242,000? WOW! 87,000 lbs of thrust more (about 56% more) than we used. :D

Yep. I'd say we've lost some marbles. But gee it's fun! ;D ;D

And while we are joking about space flights, Mr. Branson once again is a step ahead. One doesn't have to like him, but I truly adore the 'child's dream force' behind his projects.
It's all about the money of course, but what an offer, huh?

Awesome! It looks like Mr Branson, along with Burt Rutan's help, are likely to be taking people into space with regularity. It may not be very far off either. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
If only I had the money to pay to be able to afford a ticket on one of those flights! :(

Did you see that booking form on their page, where you can enter the question you like to know more about? 'Do you serve Fosters?' fits in there, I guess.  :D

I have to look closer later since I'd like to know how high and how long they will fly you (or plan to do). But you are right, amazing thing and although the 'galactic' name may be a bit too enthusiastic, I think it's one of the nicer faces of money business so far.

Clever thing, they even have some NASA bookings in the box, so some science money will be going into that project too.
