Title: Old Imagery
Post by boeing247 on Aug 11th, 2011 at 8:16pm
If you didn't know, Google Earth has a feature which allows you to see old imagery of various areas. I was looking at some airports and found this:

KJFK

Oh, if anybody else finds some old/interesting planes on Google Earth, please post!

You underestimate me.  8-)

Truth be told, though, I didn't actually find this. I did a quick Google search, then found in on Google Earth. There are a bunch of these that people have found, this one is particularly interesting because the shutter closed 4 times, creating this odd effect.

Now that, is cool!

Yeah. Most don't look like that, though. I'll look around along airways to see if I can find anything on my own.  :)

Ah, a science lesson!  ;D

It's because the camera on the satellite captures each color separately. The three primary colors of light (not color, there's a difference) are Red, Blue, and Green. I'm not sure what that fourth channel is, but I'm pretty sure it's the alpha channel (which generally refers to transparency and probably shading). The camera captures them in rapid succession, and the overlay creates the image. Notice how where the R, G, and B channels overlap, it's white (which is the color of the plane)? Now, as you may know, if you combine all the colors of light (R, G, and B, since all other colors are just mixtures of those three), you get pure white light. (If you look through a prism, the white light gets split into these colors again and creates a rainbow.)

But why is the plane all messed up? Because it's moving very fast. Satellite imagery is generally of static objects (houses, trees, etc...), so this is generally not a problem, but when a plane is captured by a satellite with a low shutter speed, it is broken down into the four channels which make up the picture.

the fourth channel is ether the alpha or yellow

It must be alpha, then, because yellow is a combination of blue and green. Yellow can be a channel, though, but it's a different set including Yellow, Cyan, and Magenta (it's the color set printers use).

I reckon they are fake images on the maps (at leat the colored ones are). That link that John gives makes it look like the jet is on the road. And what would cause the outline of the jet to show in those different colors? I don't think it's because it's moving because if it was, the image would be blurry.

Not necessarily. If the shutter closes four times--once for each channel, but the shutter closes very, very quickly, then you would have a crisp image, but with the channels separated.

How do you activate old imagery on Google maps?

Title: Re: Old Imagery
Post by pj747 on Aug 19th, 2011 at 1:23pm
Have the latest google earth. Then you go to the menu bar on teh top of the screen (that has all the little picture icons) and select the one that looks like a clock, then its intuitive.

If you go to Le Bourget, there should be some imagery of mid-June (I think in 2006). You can see a ton of planes set up for the Paris Air Show.

I found that Concorde on maps! I'll look for more things like farnborough.

There's a Concorde on a pole at Charles de-Gaulle airport. And in germany, there's a museum with a Concorde and Tu-144 together, and side-by-side.

I was looking for planes taking off outside Heathrow when I found three shadows of what appeared to be a 747. I looked around and could not find even one plane (of course, all the shadows were probably from the same plane). Any ideas as to what that was?

I'll post a screenshot when I get the chance.  ;)
