Actually American Airlines hasn't even confirmed a 'firm' order of the Boeing 787-9, their only interest variant. Delta didn't order late, they aquired their orders fron the 2007 NWA-Delta merger. NWA had a delivery slot of 3rd or 4th (i.e. late 2011 or early 2012) but they were only slots, not paid for like ANA and Japan Airlines had, so Delta pushed back orders for them; teh 767s are their bulk and work fine.

I heard from my dad (he is an American employee) that American does have a confirmed order. Confirmed for 42 with options for 58 more.
