I see what you mean about the Altitude Alerter. I think I know how that works, but I have to finish my current flight in another aircraft before I can test my theory. Once I have, I let you know if it works or not.

For editing my images, I use mspaint.exe (Paint) in Windows 7, which is a massive improvement over Paint in Windows XP. I quite often use Windows Snipping tool on the screen to copy an area of the screen I am interested in using, then I paste it into Paint and do not too fancy things to it. I'll bet that Lou uses something better than Paint to edit his images!
