I took off from STL and headed north. I was just trying to figure out the auto pilot--- not really going anywhere in particular. About 170 miles from MKE I decided to file an IFR plan to MKE. ATC vectored me to 040 to intercept the ILS for 1L. Almost too late I figured out, by watching the GPS - heh, heh, that 040 was not going to get the job done, so I disengaged the AP and tried to salvage the landing. I ended up too high and should have gone around, but I hate to do that -- it's so time consuming. Now they'll probably send me back to the ticket counter!   :)
