Title: Re: VOR Navigation Post by LOU on Jun 23rd, 2011 at 8:58pm
Johan,
In the 707 of Captain Sim there is no way to switch the nav feed to the autopilot. In some other airlines there were switches so the Captain could change the input to the autopilot, but these were custom additions. The way you would fly the VOR's is to set the present VOR in the Captain's side and the VOR to intercept in number 2 radio. As you approach the intersection you would use either heading select or manual to start a turn to intercept the new VOR. The Captain would change to the new VOR and adjust the CDI to the proper course. When on course, or close to it, resume NAV again. These early planes required a bit more work to fly complex SIDs and STARs. We thought it was OK because we did not know any better. ;D Most pilots did not use the NAV/LOC selection for the autopilot, but used heading select or manual to steer the plane around. This was smoother in most cases, but you had to pay attention to the CDI so as not to get off course when the wind would change. Now with the fancy glass displays, IRS, GPS and FMC's flying is very precise. In the 707 days we would lead the turn so as not to get too far off the radial when going from one VOR to another. Or, you could try asking for a vector from ATC and avoid all that work. ;) Lou |
