Title: Model Collections?
Post by NNewcomb on Jun 10th, 2011 at 8:53pm
I'm curious to how many people here have their own model plane collection. I have one myself consists of around 45 planes. Does anyone else have one?

I've been thinking of starting one. Where do you get your models?

Well, there are a few places I get mine. Sometimes I'll but them at hobby shops near me. But most of the time, I will get them from The Airplane Shop www.airplaneshop.com they have a big inventory most of the time I will get Skymarks models from them. they're 1:200 scale models (most of them) but I also get hogan models, and flight miniatures models. Some people have 1:400 scale airport and they're awesome! They're made by a company called Gemini Jets they have the most realistic models but they're pretty pricey. Just search "Gemini Jets airport" on YouTube and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Happy collecting!

When I was young I used to make them. I had a beautiful DC 3 "Puff the Magic Dragon" (with three side mounted gatling guns) that was given to me by a US Airman who served in Ubon, Thailand, in 1966 when my father was sent there by the RAAF during the War in Vietnam. I also had a nice Skua, Hawker Hurricane, F104 just to name a few. They were not thoe small ones, but the very highly detailed ones and I worked hard at making them look great.
Unfortunately I was a very violent kid (no joke) and by the time I was 16 I had destroyed them all with firecrackers or by setting them on fire with methylated spirits/petrol/kerosine or any other inflamable liquid I could get my hands on. One time I nearly set my brother on fire during one those episodes.
Now I really regret that I destroyed them. I grew out of my terrible violence by the time I was 17. I just wish I had 17 years earlier.

What happened, Mark? A violent kid becoming such a nice and helpful guy? Was a woman involved in that evolution?  :)
I'm still violent, but don't tell my girlfriend.  :P

Oh wow, I could never imagine myself doing anything like that to my models. I've spend a few years and over 400-500 dollars on all of my models.

When you say that you made them, would you get kits and construct, or would you carve them out of wood or something?

About 8 years ago more or less, my Dad and I made an American MD-80 model from one of the plastic kits that requires painting, gluing, decals, etc. Once it was finished, it looked phenomenal! a very detailed model. Unfortunately, I no longer have that model.  :(

Some background to take into account before I answer that. The difference between being my friend and NOT my friend, was very little. Most of my childhood friends suffered similar fates to those who chose to not be my friend or be nice to me. I beat up anyone who "p*ssed me off" (excuse the language there). My father was in the RAAF, we moved every year (except for two and a half years in Malaysia). At every new school I went to, the school bully would single me out and come to get me (I was small kid). Once I had sorted them out, you either became my friend or the same thing might, and quite often did, happen to you. When I was 11 I beat up my 4 best friends when they pissed me off, not at the same time, but over the course of the year. I was extremely vicious towards them when it happened. That same year I almost killed a neighbor of mine. I had chased him into his home and I had him on the floor with my hands around his throat squeezing with all my might, while bashing his head against a wall. Unfortunately for him, his parents weren't home at the time, but another neighbor had seen me chasing him in there. That's not surprising really, he knew what was going to happen to him when (not if) I caught him so he was screaming in fear of what was about to happen. I believe that I would have killed him (I certainly wanted to), had he not been rescued by the neighbor. When I tell the story, it brings back the dark feelings of how enraged I was at the time. So. Between the ages of 6 and 12, I was out of control. I couldn't control me.

I wasn't as bad in my teens, but there were many who still saw me go over the edge too many times, until I learned how to get the better of it. When I was in high school, I would very often get kicked out of the classroom (except for my Maths, Science and History classes) for being disruptive and sent to the Head Masters office and await punishment. I often just sat there for a while and then I would wander off and so the Head Master never got to talk to me. Since I was sitting next to his/her window, I know they knew I was there. I often got "six of the best" or the "cuts" (striking of a cane or leather strap across the hand or butt) on a regular basis, but it was part and parcel of who and how I was back then. I've been told by my friends (the ones I still have left from those days), that I would get this look in my eyes that was nothing short of pure evil and it used to really frighten them. It was like I had become someone else when I got "that look" in my eyes.

So. What happened? Well it was my parents who helped me sort it out, or at least it was they who started it. They pulled me over and told me that they wanted to talk to me (I was about 14 then) and they said that my behavior was unacceptable and if I couldn't get control of myself I would wind up in some very big trouble and that if that happened, they wouldn't be able to help me get out of it. It took me another 3 or 4 years to actually figure it out, but I got there.

The pleasure I get from knowing that I have helped someone out, is why I do it. It's that simply.

Mark

Wow, thanks for answering that, Mark.

As said, you are the most helpful and friendly guy around, so it's rather surprising that this appearance was so different in your younger ages.
So as long as you don't smash simulators on a regular basis, you're really welcome.  :P :)

Good for you for doing something, Mark. That takes character. If only more people actually changed, I might be a bit less cynical...  ;)

Anyway, about models, does anybody have opinions on the best companies that sell unassembled models like the MD-80 that NNewcomb mentioned? I enjoy the building of the model probably more than the finished product.  :)

Wow Mark, if you ever hear someone say "people don't change" I bet you could get a good laugh from that.

I can't remember the name of the company, but I'm sure you can find them at a hobby shop such as HobbytownUSA or Hobby Lobby.

After reading Mark's first post I remembered my youth when I had my airplanes models collection too. I dare to say I was a Revell's plastic models addict http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revell . They were really nice ones. It was my favorite hobby. Well, all of them had the same fate and were lost along the time. :(

I've heard of that company before, I'm not sure if I have/have had any but they're pretty nice ;)

Most of mine were Revell. I always considered them to be the best. When I was in my mid to late teens, I bought the cheaper ones that the didn't fit together like they should have.

So as long as you don't smash simulators on a regular basis, you're really welcome.
Nahhh. I love flight simming too much. But I might just destroy the aircraft in FS. And that is where CS Weapon for FSX comes into play. ;)

Wow Mark, if you ever hear someone say "people don't change" I bet you could get a good laugh from that.
Yeah. I have read some books about people who changed completely. From worse than I was like to very respectful people.

Mark

@boeing247
A lot of people have been talking about Revell models, I bet if you go into one of the stores I was talking about, you could find almost any full kit model you're looking for. I've been in some stores that have entire sections dedicated to Revell model plane kits. But unfortunately there aren't very many commercial models :( (not to say that I don't like other types of aviation, because I do!  ;D )

There's a hobby shop not too far from my house. I'm not sure what their selection is, because I only go there to get model rockets.  ;)
