Title: South African Airways livery Post by keatles on Apr 20th, 2011 at 2:54am
Hi Alex
Thanks for a great model. I accumulated over 2400 hours on 707s, and it was one of the most graceful airplanes I ever flew. Not many people know that the only hydraulic power control was to the rudder and yaw damper system - the horizontal stabilizer was electrically trimmed but manually moved, and the ailerons manually controlled with aerodynamic assistance. My only criticism of my old airline's livery (SAA) is the distorted springbok. I have done a repaint and would be happy to share it with anyone. Alan springbok.jpg (Attachment deleted) |

Hi Alan,
I agree with your criticism. Prior to 1997 the emblem of SAA was a blue "flying" Springbok (Afrikaans and Dutch: spring = jump; bok = antelope or goat), on an orange background. Orange, white and blue were the then national colours of South Africa and the springbok was the national emblem. The tail of SAA aircraft were orange with the springbok logo in the centre. "Springbok" is the call sign of SAA flights. http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR8qTBdHZN3wtJl1_R4IojrgUKTbUO4EFyeF0PCfPnIng-YLcVt http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS8mtnv7aLvHB3aGOQT_gPt1HX73LrpbMDAXqhUC81bPNga0g_h |

@Pinatubo
The livery you show is a later one than the one supplied by CaptSim - I don't think any 707s were repainted in the 1980s livery before they were sold off. Here are the springboks from the 1960s . 1970s and 1980s. Alan SAA_logos.jpg (Attachment deleted) |

Hi Alan,
Well, I found the SAA (coloured) emblem showed in my last post and others historical emblems as below, at SAA Museum Society website http://www.saamuseum.co.za/saa-history.html (bottom of page). I think it is a reliable source. 1934 / 1948 / 1971 Pinatubo. |

Hi Pinatubo
To explain the difference, below is a picture of SAA B737s in the liveries from 1968 to 1980 (from L to R). The springbok you show in your first post is the 1980s livery. No 707 was ever painted in this livery. I know, because I flew both types(707 & 737) between 1968 and 1980 at SAA. The Captain Sim springbok is a distorted version of the 1970s emblem.
