Title: Layman's solution for installing INS in 707-300? Post by BrianG on Mar 26th, 2011 at 4:43am
Hi I'm trying to get the CIVA INS into the 707. So far I've got the file in the FSX root folder but confused on where to go from there. Do I need to drop this folder in the 707 folder specifically? Looking for a simple solution if there is such a thing. Thanks for any help

Brian, please search the forums. There's a solution out, a whole thread on questions (and answers! :P) regarding the Civa INS and all of this not so far away from your thread. ;)
As the INS unit itself is quite a task to operate, this hurdle is just your first one. Don't be frightened though, even I could handle it so far. :) |

Thanks CoolP,
I did see that thread right after I posted this. Looks deep but I'll give it a try. I've seen youtube's of Civa operation. Doesn't look too tough. It's just this installation stuff. |

When you install it, there's some tutorial in the "Docs" folder. And, yes, those videos might help too.
That's very old navigation stuff, so don't worry to struggle on the first attempts. Later, you will find yourself smiling about the "moving map" people. Turn off their screens and they are lost. Like Lou would say, Sissy stuff! ;D (he even names the INS like this) |

As an alternative to INS, doppler works pretty well and is easy to operate.

From what I've seen INS reminds me of Loran C, maybe even a bit more primitive. Doppler on the 707 is very easy to use and works great for me. In real life when was INS used rather than doppler on the 707? Look as though both systems accomplish the same goal.
Although all this is so outdated, it's fun to have the opportunity to use all this from a historical perspective. Makes me appreciate modern tech. even more. Old school nav. systems are fun but so time consuming and labor intensive |

Looking at a 1982 Boeing manual, only INS and LORAN are described.
