Title: Aviation Knowledge
Post by boeing247 on Mar 21st, 2011 at 5:15am
Hi, all. Rather than bug everybody every time my knowledge of aviation is not adequate to properly fly a plane (you've all been very nice, but I'm sure it's annoying ;)), could anybody recommend a website or book that would give a better understanding to me on some of these topics (like navigation, aircraft systems, etc.) so I don't have to keep questioning you guys? Thanks!

Apologies from my side, boeing247.
I think that my tenor often seemed like "go and search then Net!", which is a good tenor of course  :P but doesn't come as polite as it should be, sometimes. :-[

So, maybe I can help you.
There are some good sources around, mainly pdf based books, which give you everything you need to really fly a plane. So no special sim based knowledge there, but true one.
The FAA hosts a site for those free books, a lot to read.
You will get the Airplane Flying Handbook there, a well known source for all rw pilot operations, giving you all details and, if you like, even a small course to advance from single engine to twins, to turbines and later to jets, if you just read from page 1 to the end.

Well, that's a lot of stuff there but might not come as handy as a nice website or some videos would do.
So, maybe you take a look into this department, offering a full video course for the very basic things in aviation. A great thing, you will like it, for sure!
Here's the first episode, starting with the very basics and slowly advancing then. The whole video course called Aviator 90 is for free, although you will see some "sing in!" messages here and there.
Don't worry, the company also offers courses for the 747-400 and MD11, as regular (pay) products, so that's why they advertise them here and there.

An overview about the available tutorials is given here, so you can surf to your most favorite "like to know" item there. http://forum.avsim.net/forum/340-tutorials/

I would step in via the video course and if you develop question on some details, I would use the book (which is a searchable pdf file) to catch the detail view there.

Here are some more rw lessons to watch. http://www.youtube.com/user/georgewscott#p/u/1/UoiUrTjuo6U

Thanks, CoolP! This looks like some good material.  :) Anyways, I have tried searching the net for things, but some websites leave me more confused than when I started. Thanks again!  ;D

You can buy videos and tutorial lessons (on video) and books from this great company, Sporty's Pilot Shop.

Cool, thanks! They have a book called "Microsoft Flight Simulator X for Pilots" on how to use FSX realistically and for real-world training. That looks like just what I was looking for.  ;D
