Title: What's the point on getting the VC-137C?
Post by cyberstudio on Mar 5th, 2011 at 7:26pm
Hi guys!

Im planning to get the cargo and the E-3 variants. but... what's the point on getting the VC-137C? To me, it looks like the base pack with a hight-res paint.

Im missing something??

Yeah, that's cool :P but...  What is included with the VC-137? its just the repaint?

I'm pretty sure he's saying isn't it just a repaint of the 707? So what would the point be of buying it if you could just get a repaint?

One thing I noticed, is there are some kind of "pods" on the engine mounts (can't think of what they are really called right now) that are not found on the 707-300 & 300C. The E-3 has different ones (not pointed at the back). I have no idea what they are, but they may have something to do with defending it from missile attacks.

Has anybody seen if there is a new interior (Presidential stuff)?

The interior consists of the 707-300 VC light (no cabin). The following is from the model.cfg in the FSX\SimObjects\Airplanes\CS_VC137\model.137 folder:

[models]
normal=..\model\csx703_137
interior=..\..\CS_B707-300\model\csx701_interior_light

Well, that is slightly disappointing, but I'll still probably buy it.

I have been wondering too, since we already have a AF1 repaint.

Don't know if this helps you guys, but the manual1 states

Quote:
VC-137 Expansion Model
Expansion for 707-300 base pack.
707-300 base pack required.
This part of the manual describes the VC-137 specific features only.

BOEING AIR FORCE ONE AIRCRAFT
The long-range version of the Boeing 707-320 intercontinental became the most commonly ordered version of the 707 airliner. Its fuselage was 8 feet longer than the 707-120 and its wingspan was 12 feet longer.
With new turbofan jet engines, the B versions had a range of 6,000 miles, and in 1962, a 707-320B took over the role of U.S. government VIP and presidential transport, designated VC-137C. A second VC-137C was delivered in 1972. These were the first Air Force Ones.
President John F. Kennedy's wife, Jacqueline Kennedy, selected the colors of the first Air Force One, VC-137C. The 707s served as presidential aircraft until they were replaced by 747-200s in 1990.

And the things Mark asked about are described as 78 EWSM aerial fairing while some other subtle things are mentioned, separating the Lady from the other variants.
So I think that if you just use the paint on the normal 707, you are close while this models enables you to be right on the spot.

So it's left to personal preference to buy it or not. Maybe Nathan can do some "presidential" variations of the paintwork on her.
I'd suggest the first one to have a really shiny and polished silver finish, like suggested by another forum user before.  :)

Hmmm... there're some reasons to buy it... Maybe I'll get it today.

Here's one for you CoolP. What does the EWMS stand for? I couldn't find it anywhere.

Electronic? Warfare? M??? S??? I can't think of what it might stand for beyond that. :(

I think it's Electronic Warfare Manager's Station. It says somewhere in the B-52 manual...

Too bad, they could havegotten the interior model just from pics of the VC-137 at the Reagan Library. Could have gotten those pics for them.....

Wow! Someone who actually reads the manual. That's rare.  Not only that, this is the VC137 (a 707) and not a B-52. ;)

But the acronym would be the same, no? Though I just checked the B-52 manual, and it's not in there... maybe I saw it somewhere else.

Yep. It isn't there. But at least you made me go looking for it!  :P

i did a bit of googling on EWSM instead of EWMS and found this:

Electronic Warfare Support Measures [Later, ESM] (AABC)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_warfare_support_measures

so... in a way when you fly the presidential A/C, you have some defense against all those cowboys who are playing with the weapons for FSX :P

Guys, remember that we have to vote for a E warfare station on the plane when the Weapons get multiplayer ready.
Imagine flying some support for your Fighter fellows there.   :D

That would be pretty cool. I wonder when the first upgrade for weapon will come out...

It's always interesting to see where these discussions end up...

The "pods" some of you noticed on the VC-137 and E-3 near the the back of the wings and above the engines are small but very intense lasers that confuse and throw-off the infared guidance of hand-held missiles such as the old SA-7 shoulder fired missles that every former Soviet Union country and by now most terrorist have in their inventory. The difference between the "pointed-ones" on the VC-137 and the "flat" pods on the E-3 is that the aero-dynamic cover is removed on the E-3 who flys outside of U.S. more often and rarely have the covers installed.

The real question for me is:

Did they update the VC textures for the VC-137? Using the normal beat-up cockpit textures would be like renting a limo and finding folding chairs in the back. The real VC-137 flight deck is spit-and polished beautifully. Even in service, they are that way. I've flown enough AF1 support, I would know.
