Yeah. I get that the data is "magnetic" because magnetism is not good for floppy disks or hard disk drives.
For example, if data is stored on an old floppy disk, and if you place a magnet  near the FD, or perhaps if it's affected by solar radiation, then the data is destroyed/corrupted, and if I update/upgrade the software on the FD, it would still get destroyed/corrupted if I put a magnet near it, or solar radiation gets through to it. That's why it would be needed to protect the hardware itself  from allowing the magnetism/solar radiation to get through to where that software is actually stored (like wrapping it in a lead lined case). So to me it doesn't make sense that it would need a software fix (update/upgrade), but actually needs a hardware fix.
If the data is stored on something like a Solid State Drive, it would suffer the same fate regardless of a software upgrade, because the radiation is affecting the physical components that the SSD is made from.
