Title: Low FPS? Possible solution found!! :o) Post by Karolina on Feb 7th, 2011 at 7:10pm
History
Do you remember my problems with low fps I wrote about a few months ago? Seven (or eight?) months ago I bought a new hi-end computer for it´s ability to play fsx with (hungry) payware addons. Before I bought it, my computer was a small tablet pc with a bad performance, so I wanted something better. When the machine came and I unpacked the boxes, installed Win 7 x64, installed programs, FSX and all addons that I wanted to try, I turned on the FSX and waited what is going on. What was my worse surprise - I had only 7-13fps at minimum settings with no ground and air traffic and fps was very shaky and stuttering. That was very bad surprise, because FSX was the only one software I had problems with. Dirt 2 at max settings 50-60fps, Shift at max with 50-60, Call of Duty at max with 50-60......"so what is this?" I asked myself. Tweaking circus and looking for solution started at that time. I tried many...many tweaks, many programs, many miracle solutions...and nothing helped - still 7-13fps (It was not only CS problem, but almost all payware addons). Possible solution One of the "miracle" solutions which someone gave me was - "Install fsx alone on another hard drive" So, two months ago I installed fsx od the D\ drive and...nothing helped, the fps was still so bad. But a few weeks ago, another solution came on my mind - "what if I will make two-system computer, will it help?" I asked myself. Two weeks ago I finally decided to try this solution. I separated the system HDD into two same partitions. On the first partition I installed Win 7 x64 and other software I need, and on the second partition I installed Win XP x64 with FSX only (no other software). The first partition with Win 7 was the default system for working, internet, music, video and other entertainment. The partition with XP was only for FSX - no other software....and ALL of unnesesary services turned off - I do not fly multiplayer, so I could turn all of the net (and other) services off, so I do not need firewall and antivirus too. System was clean with only about 10 services running. First time I turned FSX on I was pleasantly surprised - "WHAT?" the average fps was 22fps with CS767 (in some areas it jumped to 30fps) - so it was a high jump and everything was playable. But. One week ago I decided to try another solution - no Win 7 + XP, but Win 7 + Win 7 ... will it help? After few-hour installation and system tweaking process I finally turned on the FSX a waited what will happen. In the first moments I could not believe what I see - my test airport was always Calgary Intl. Before I installed the two systems, I had average 7fps here...when I installed it on partition with XP I had 22 average...but when I installed it on partition with Win 7, I had average 40fps with same settings (low scenery, low autogen, no ground/air traffic):o :D Now I can set everything almost at maximum (scenery high, autogen high, weather mid, air traffic 100% (ultimate traffic 2), airport vehicles 100%, ground traffic 0% (Ido not need cars)), antialiasing max (forced by driver), and still have average 33fps (CS767) without weather radar and 22fps with radar. Finally I do not have ugly dead world, but nice looking and living world :D It´s amazing...if I could find this solution earlier ::) :D Here are some screenshots WX Off - http://karolina84.rajce.idnes.cz/FSX/#WXOFF3.jpg WX Off 2 - http://karolina84.rajce.idnes.cz/FSX/#WXOFF.jpg WX On - http://karolina84.rajce.idnes.cz/FSX/#WXON2.jpg WX On 1 - http://karolina84.rajce.idnes.cz/FSX/#WXON.jpg System selection - http://karolina84.rajce.idnes.cz/FSX/#Systemselection.jpg A little average fps summary: Before Win 7+Win XP Win 7+Win 7 WX off - low settings 13 25 42 WX off - high settings 7 20 37 WX on - low settings 7 20 35 WX on - high settings 3 14 23 So if you have only one system and have low fps - try this. I think this solution should be added into FAQs. Hope this helps. :) |

On my old computer, I quite good frame rates in both Windows XP and Windows 7 even when I was running them together on a dual boot system. I eventually done away with Windows XP because I just wasn't using it any more. I can't remember what the frame rate actual numbers were, but they were no where near as bad as you had.
Just because no one has said it helped them, doesn't mean that you haven't helped someone. ;) |
