Post by jayo on Sep 6th, 2010 at 2:46pm
I have a problem that every time I fly the 727-200 it will stall as I am climbing up to fl250. I dont seem to have the problem with the 727-100. i cant get the pitch correct.  any help would be greatly appreciated

The 727-200 is a dog! You have to climb slowly to reach a decent altitude. Try and maintain a climb at between 280-300 KIAS (You can try at 260-270 KIAS). I can eventually climb to a level of about FL300 when at MTOW. The trick is to keep an eye on the speed and lower the pitch to maintain it!

Hope this helps

Hi jayo.

If worst comes to worst, do a climb at 260 KIAS. I don't recommend any slower. Another trick that can help is to level out to gain speed, then climb again. I do that to try for greater altitudes, like FL350 which is about as high as I have gotten it.

Do you know what a normal flight level is for the 727-200 ? i know alot plays into that decision but just a basic idea?

As a general rule that I use. And I don't think this is the correct way to do it, but... If the 727-200 is struggling to maintain a climb of 200-300 fpm AND 260 KIAS, I'm probably flying too high for the weight. I'll descend about 1000-2000 feet if that starts happening. That's when it "feels" like it's just too heavy to go any higher.

I'm going by the "feel", if you can call it that.
