Title: Tutorial anyone?
Post by montreal on Aug 23rd, 2010 at 12:06pm
Love this plane but now realize this beauty is much more complicated to fly than the 767 or 757. As it doesn't look like CS will issue any tutorials, I would welcome any help from the fellow simmers.

Anyone? Thank you!

I also have asked for one but it will have to come from one of us as CS says they don't do tutorials for their aircraft.

I'm in the same plane. I"ve posted a request but have not got a response. Tried to use the start-up in the manual and still can't get it started. Shift-G does not work for ground power in FSX, it may work for FS9, don't know. Hope I didn't waste $70.00. I have been looking on the web for something that may work, if I find anything I'll let you know.

Hi Jesse.

Many of us had trouble starting it when we first got it. It seems like we have all figured it out now (I can start mine easily, every time now). See this Topic HERE for more help on starting the 707.

Once you get it figured out, you will be able to start it first time, every time.

One gotcha: if you take a long time before trying to start engines, that can result in them being unable to start.  That happened to me, for example, in taking these screenshots.

Tim,
Thanks for the tutorial.
I found an interesting help. If  engines some reason doesn't start after Tim's tutorial, I select "Aircraft Select" and reload the 707. Implement the above procedure, engines starts with out any problem.

Much thanks to Markos and Tim Capps, finally got her started and it was great. Took her up for a quick spin, still trying to figure things out but starting to really like this plane. Have more time now to really get into it.

You should have used a faster shutter speed on the camera Tim! ;D ;D ;D Just kidding. Nice work!

When I tested that the other day, I turned on the External Power, External Air, had everything set the same as you have shown us there and I didn't start the engines. I walked away from my computer for about 35 minutes and I was still able to start the engines. I have not tried it beyond that length of time yet. So it is a question of how long before you are no longer able to start the engines.

From what I saw the reason is that the battery drains even if external power is on and the ammeter does not show a negative load on the battery! Watch the battery voltage going down while you prepare for engine start. Below a certain voltage there is no way to start the engines.

If you have a registered copy of FSUIPC give the battery unlimited life, that get's this problem solved - Mark I guess that's why you don't see the problem as well.

Mark,
If all starting procedures completed and engine didn't start, you have one more chance start with Ctrl+E. If nothing happen, in my experience it will not start any longer. Just try "select Aircraft" reload the 707 again, all engine will start . ;) ;)

Think I found the problem with the battery.  Thinking "electric_always_available=1" worked on all the other Captain Sim airplanes, I checked the electrical section in the aircraft config file.  Lo and behold, it was already there!  But upon closer look, "available" is misspelled.  Correct the spelling and I bet the problem goes away.

Just confirming that correcting the typo does the trick.

Since the engine start is covered, never had a prob with it myself, I'll be happy to make some vids, just request what type of tutorial, systems. autopilot, flight itself?? I'll be happy to do it.. cheers..

:)Thanks for the offer- I for one wouldn't mind a short flight tutorial covering evrything except for engine startup which Tim already covered.

Capt Sim, A tutorial is not tech support but a document on learning to fly the 707. The manuals you made are very good but they do not explain how things should be done just what order to do them. Most flight sim aircraft from FS9 to FSX come with a tutorial flight. You are the only one I know that does not make a tutorial for its aircraft.

Jeff your wasting your breath,
CS have by far (IMO) have done there greatest job on the 707 but never bother with there silly canned answers.

Has anyone been able to start the engines with the main central fuel tank empty?

After seeing your post, I went and tried it. Yes I can. This was how the fuel was distributed in the tanks:

Left Aux     100%
Left              0%
Center          0%
Right            0%
Right Aux    100%
Left Tip      100%
Right Tip    100%

I COULD NOT start the engines if:
(1) only the Left Aux had fuel (100%)
(2) only the Right Aux had fuel (100%)
(3) only the Left Tip had fuel (100%)
(4) only the Right Tip had fuel (100%)

I COULD start the engines if:
(1) only the Left had fuel (1% 272.6 lbs)
(2) only the Right had fuel (1% 272.6 lbs)
(3) only the Center had fuel (0.4% 306 lbs)
(4) if the Left Aux and Right Aux tanks both had fuel (0.9% 140.1 lbs each)
(5) if the Left Tip and Right Tip tanks both had fuel (4.8% 141.2 lbs each)

The fuel Boost Pumps for the tanks that have fuel must be turned ON. NO fuel in tank, NO fuel boost pumps. The fuel Boost Pumps for the Left Aux will also pump the fuel from the Left Tip into the Left Aux first. The same applies for the fuel Boost Pumps for the Right Aux pumping fuel from the Right Tip to the Right Aux first.

Of course any single tank with fuel (excepting the Center Tank) is NOT a good idea. ;D

Thanks a lot Mark.

I will use your fuel configuration for short trips.

Left Aux     100%
Left              0%
Center          0%
Right            0%
Right Aux    100%
Left Tip      100%
Right Tip    100%

I might have been doing something wrong when I was flying with the following config

Left Aux     0%
Left              50%
Center          10%
Right            50%
Right Aux    0%
Left Tip       0%
Right Tip      0%

I had a 2 engine flameout at 30,000ft, #2 and 4, when the center tank emptied out and could not restart the engines. I tried ram air with high pressure along with air start but the engines did not want to light up. I guess I'll recheck the fuel setting configuration on the F/E station.

Remember the estimated fuel burn the default FS flight planner gives you is wrong. I've found the figure given is approximately 130% the fuel burned by one engine. My formula for fuel planning is (( FS estimated fuel burn x 0.75) x 4 ) + total / estimated trip time.

That usually gives me enough fuel for taxi and then a missed approach and a TOGA or two :D

For longer trips I multiply cruise time (usually trip time - 1 hour) by fuel burn rate at chosen FL, for more precise and optimised fuel planning.

As for fuel distribution, I follow the procedure as detailed in the manual to the letter. Hasn't failed me so far.

Cheers

Nico

Thanks for the engine start tutorial.
The problem I have is that my nose wheels do not turn so I cannot roll to the runway or anyway else than straight on.

By the way, can I also start the engines without external services?

Title: Re: Tutorial anyone?

The only way to start the engines without external services, that I know of, is CTRL+E. Unfortunately that may not start all the engines. Luckily, with three engines running you can start the stubborn engine (at least you should be able to).
