I find it best to line up on the ILS from a fair way out (10nm - 15nm) and below the G/S. Once I have captured the ILS, I wait until just before the G/S reaches the center of the ADI. Once ILS and G/S are captured, I switch to MAN G/S on the A/P. MAN G/S is much smoother than AUTO G/S, less rocking and rolling while it is trying to stay "on the ball", so to speak. This works for me every time. I get a nice smooth approach and landing.
