I believe the FL CH is the key to maintaining or loosing speed while descending. I can now setup T/D a lot closer to the destination airport than before when I was using SPD, V/S, and Alt HOLD. I am starting down now between 100 and 115 nm using FL CH compared to 140 to 160 nm from the airport when using the other method. I believe the T/D as computed by the FMC is somewhere between these two profiles. Whatever, I will use VNAV to climb and cruise and FL CH to decsend.

And the speedbrakes are a lot more effective using FL CH.
