Title: autoland problems
Post by nhraracer90 on May 6th, 2009 at 2:32am
Ok..once I put the correct settings and everything into the ILS frequencies and what not, I click the LOC (localizer button) and then the plane will align with the runway and then I push the APP (approach) and once the plane captures the glideslope it will start to descend like normal. My approach speed was 150-160 and flaps were set to full but the aircraft points the nose down when approaching the runway instead of it beings the opposite. It also keeps saying don't sink don't sink (i think) and when it lands it lands level instead of on the back tires like ti should. It doesn't flare which that would be an autoland I assume. I was landing at a CAT III runway, so autoland should of worked, but the autoland indicator said no autoland. What is going on?  Any help would be nice.  Thanks

If you want, you can just press APP instead off LOC and then APP. APP will arm both ILS and GS.

If you hear "Don't sink" that mean that you are too fast...

Ok, I had my speed at 135 and i still heard "dont sink" lol..how do I set up the flare for autoland?

Flare is set automatically and you'll need at least 2 working AP for an autoland. (AUTOLAND 2 or 3)...

ok, when I am approaching the runway, I have the left AP switch on and the other 2 AP switches come on automatically when I get closer to the runway. If i press the center AP button the left one will go off. And the aircraft will not flare.  The throttle idles back automatically, but it will not flare.

Everytime I land i keep hearing "dont sink" it doesnt matter if i am at 135kts or 165kts or anywhere in between.

I renamed the "GPWS_Dont_Sink.wav"  in FSX/sound, so I does not bother me anymore

I dont get this, it will not flare. It just lands on all tires level or sometimes the front tire first. unbelievable

I Believe that the "Dont Sink" Warning will be activated when the aircraft is maneuvering at a LOW AIRSPEED & HIGH POWER SETTING ,

e.g. you're on finals with a nose high attitude, low speed and therefore high power to stay in the air

you could try trimming the aircraft to maintain a lower nose attitude, i usually come down a glide slope at around 145kias (rule of thumb), between 0*-8* nose up attitude with the appropriate flap setting for my weight and the weather and disengage the AP at 100ft AGL

try that and see how you get on,

or if it's really getting on your collar - delete the sound file - but that's the "unsafe" way to do it

Best of luck

Zakk  :)

It looks to me like you're trying to turn off Autoland during the landing procedure, which is fine if you want to practice an aborted landing or are trying to land yourself. But there is an apparent bug with this aircraft right now (see AP will not disengage), in that you may not be able to manually control the aircraft after disengaging the AP.
Also, as for landing speed, if you have set up the CDU properly, then on the Approach Ref page, it will give you the speed you should be flying for a given flap setting.
I don't recall if the aircraft will flare during autoland or not.

Ok..i dont believe im turning off the landing procedure..
Zakk: When I am on the finals the nose isnt up in the aircraft, once it captures the glideslope it eithers stays nosed down in the glideslope or stays mostly level.  It stays in the glideslope fine, thats not a problem. I watch the one display and once it gets close to the runway, the FLARE on the screen turns green, but it wont do it. It just hits the runway hard.

don't forget to also dial in your MDA/DH figure.  In most cases this should be set to minimums... I.E. 400 ft or so.  I really don't know if the DH setting plays in with the autoland computer... but it's part of the procedure.

When you get to the callout of "ONE HUNDRED" look at your ADI, and you'll notice in the corner it will soon say "FLARE" and the nose will pitch up.

Do be sure to fly the right approach speed for the flap setting and landing weight.  If you are too fast, the AP will *HAVE* to push you nose down to do what you're asking it to do, since the plane won't lose alt in a nose-up or level attitude at higher speeds.

what is MDA?  Yeah i know when it gets to "one hundred" it does say "flare", but the nose wont pitch up, it doesnt do anything at all. Shouldn't the flaps be set to full for landing anyway?

Hi nhracer90,

You say yourself they you are turning off the other autopilots by clicking on the centre cmd button.  This will in effect turn off autoland and simply give you ILS following with autothrottle.  You have to have all three cmd buttons lit and the autoland annunciator lit green to get the flare.  Seems to me like your procedure is fine except for clicking the cmd button after all three are lit.

Regards,

Hey,
Well i only clicked the center button one time just to see.. when i am approaching the left CMD button is on and when I get closer to the runway the other 2 automatically light up and the green light will come on.   thanks
