Title: Looking for some data
Post by Bigbry on Jun 19th, 2006 at 7:41pm
G'day to all.

I am looking for a bit of help from all you Herc gurus.

I have started work on a C-130/L100 profile to use with FSBuild 2.2 (flight planner).

I use my Herc as a civilian cargo, and use FSBuild as my flight planning tool. Unfortunately, it does not contain an already made profile for the Herc.

Some of the required data is easy to find (speeds... etc) but the fuel consumption is harder to find (to complete a full performance file for FSBuild). I was wondering if anyone could point me to some good sources that I could use.

This is my 1st attempt at building such a performance file for FSBuild, so it might take me some time to complete. But it will be available to all interested users once I am done.

Cheers to all!

Wow!  If you could put that together, I'd be eternally grateful.  I, too, am an FSBuild user, but don't have the full know-how to put together an accurate profile.

If it's of any interest, a friend of mine was trying to put a profile together for Jeppesen's Flitestar (another flightplanner that you can use for FS).  Never got enough data for it, but here's a link to a discussion with real-world C-130 pilots that might be of assistance to you:

Anyway, please keep us posted on any progress!  Again, I'd love to have a good FSBuild profile for the mighty Herk.

Thanks a bunch.

Thanks Holzem.

I am making good process. Not timeframe, but keep your finger cross. There is also a demand for this on the FSBuild forum. So I guess I might get a few "kudos" if I can pull this off.

It would of course be quite easy if we would have performance charts (like the great ones that come with the Flight1 PC-12). But like my late grandfather used to say: "If there's a will... there's a way!". I will get this done!

And keep the heat on me once a week...!

Incidentally... there was a similar request at avsim by the same poster in the previous thread I linked to.  Here's the thread:

http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=121&topic_id=280355&mode=full

The question is asked on Page 4 of the thread, and some pretty good answers are given by a real Herk driver on Page 6 of the same thread.  Take a look.. I'm hoping some of this data provides you with enough to carry you forward.

Talk to you soon.

Just a quick update to Holzem (and all other interested).

With the help of many, and with much internet browsing, I believe I have all the data necessery to complete the FSBuild profile.

After some planning and sorting out, I also decided that I will be building the profile not based on "real-life" performance, but on "Captain Sim C-130E" performance. What I mean by that is that I want to reflect how the SIMULATED Herc will perform. Since this is how I fly C-130's (for simulation, not for real) I figure it's the way to go.

So I will concentrate on test flying the C-130E (that will fun!) with different power settings and build the profile on how the CS C-130 performs. That way, the profile will be more "virtually realistic".

Once again, special thanls to Holzem for some very good info.

Hey, thanks for the update!  Looking very forward to using your FSBuild profile, too.  I think it's a smart move to go with the CapSim "specs" since that's the C-130 of choice most sim flyers will be utilizing.  I'm sure the fuel burn is at least fairly close to the real thing anyway.

Please contact me if you have a "build" ready of your profile.  I'd love to try it out!

I'll post here to say that if you can use a spreadsheet I can help you get to very close approximations of fuel burn etc. No secrets. No midnight knocks on the door. But really the information is out there in text books and so much fun to apply to simming that I wonder "Why seek on the net when you can do it yourself?" What did the Jockanese engineer say in "Space Trek"? Was it "Ye canna change the laws of physics!"? I think so. Searching for answers is one thing. Searching how to come up with answers is a better thing. If you and your moderators want a little gentle input, I can try to put a little back into what has given me a very happy life.

If it'll help, I'll pull out the -1 and do some scanning of the performance charts...

Thanks to all! If all goes well, my profile should be done in the next few days. As stated below, I decided to stick to Captain Sim performance, and not "real world" performance, because they are some quite drastic differences (that I had no clue about until starting researching for this.)

Bigbry:

Any word?  Thought I'd give you a couple of weeks from your last post to mull it over.  Have you finished the FSBuild profile?

I'm still highly interested (as I'm sure others on the FSBuild forums would be too!).

Thanks for checkin' up.

I HAD everything done. Started testing and getting some weird results within FSBuild. So I need to review everything to see where I made a mistake. It might be a simple type somewhere in my file.

I am off for a few days next week, so I will have time to do it.
