South African Repaints

Anyone up for this challenge, South African Airways circa late 60's 70's 80's (old orange tails and flying springboks) Circa 90's to retirement.

The 737 is also operated by SAA Cargo.
Kulula.com and Comair (British Airways) also used the type up to 2010.

Nationwide Airlines also used 737's 727-100 and 200's up to when they were grounded after a 737-200 dropped an engine at Cape Town International.

SAFAIR also did all the conversions for SAA cargo, fitting the side cargo door etc. I hope this will give some kind repainter some ideas and inspiration to repaint the SA aircraft.

I had this one started long ago (put it on the finnair livery just to show you), but didn't like the tail colours much and besides aligning them was killing me and so i gave up after a while. If i get to finish the tail, the rest would be easy to produce, a cargo and freighter versions:

I remember David Sweetman put out a template that made painting the tail easier, did anyone keep that template or has any ideas on how to paint and align the tail properly? I feel i'm missing something here, it takes me too long to get the tail straight Embarrassed

Sadly they changed the colours when Apartheid ended. As much as I did not support what the previous regime stood for, our planes were distinctive with that orange tail. I remember arriving on a flight from YYZ to LNR in 1985 and you saw those orange tails easily. The new livery although colourful and pretty, is confused with Air Namibia. Still, I flew many hours in the "fluffy" or "pocket rocket" as they were called here.

I lost count on how many of them I flew, because they replaced the 727's and were used often on the Cape Town - Durban run. Normally with a stop of in Port Elizabeth or East London, or sometimes, if you were lucky, you got both. A number of those 737's were taken over by Comair which operate in either BA or Kulula liveries. The rest were taken over by Safair or modified for SAA Cargo. Will look forward to the classic orange tail.
