fuel from all tanks
27.07.2010 at 12:12:01

Hi, i am pretty much a hobby flyer and know a little to keep the 727 in the air and take off/land nicely Smiley

What i noticed is that when i take a short flight and fuel up the tanks for example 40% to make it from for example EHAM to LIPZ.

I notice that tank 1 and 3 are nearly empty, but tank 2 is still having alot of fuel. When tank 1 and 3 are depleted, the engines 1 and 3 will stop, but the 2nd engine keeps on running because that tank isn't depleted.

Can someone please explain me how i can connect the engines 1 and 3 to the second tank so it will pick up it's fuel from there, so my engine wont fall out?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Best regards,

Edwin

Hi Edwin.

Follow this advice from JETPILOT:

JETPILOT wrote on 19.07.2009 at 04:26:25:
There are 3 tanks on the 727. None of them are mains since there are no aux tanks. The hydraulic fluid in the 727 is fuel cooled. The 727 has "A" system hydraulic cooling in tank #3. The "B" system hydraulic fluid is cooled in fuel tank #1.  The tanks should never be drained or the hydraulic fluid could overheat. If tank #2 has more than #1 and #3 then you crossfeed from tank #2 until all 3 tanks are equal then set the fuel system up to feed tank to engine. Fuel tanks 1&3 should never have more than #2.

The procedure to setup a crossfeed from tank 2 to engines 1&3 is...

Continuos ignition: ON
Boost pumps Tank 2: Foward/AFT ON
Crossfeed valves: OPEN
Blue Valve In Trasit Lights ON then OFF
Boost Pumps Tanks 1 & 3: OFF
Boost pump low pressure lights: Illuminated
Fuel Flow Guages: CHECK
EPR Gauges: CHECK
Continuos ignition: OFF

Maybe you are operating the fuel shutoff valves? They should always be "open" and never touched in flight unles there is an emergency!
Entire forum Topic from which the quote above was taken can be found HERE.

He used to have an image to show what to do but it is no longer available. If you have trouble following what he says to do, just say so and I'll post an image similar to what he did.

Hope this helps.

Hi Edwin.

It goes like this. Turn OFF the Left & Right FWD & AFT Fuel Pumps then turn ON the Left & Right Fuel Crossflow Valves. This allows the Center Fuel Tank to feed fuel to all three engines (see image). Once the Center Fuel Tank EQUALS the same as the Left and Right fuel Tanks, Turn ON the Left & Right FWD & AFT Fuel Pumps then turn OFF the Left & Right Fuel Crossflow Valves so that three fuel tanks will drop at the same rate for the remainder of the flight.

I do NOT turn off the Fuel Pumps nor turn on the Crossflow Valves this until after take off and my climb is established. Also. When I set up the airplane for short flight, try to give all tanks an equal (or as near to it as I can) amount of fuel thus eliminating the need to do all that.

Hope this helps.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the screenshot!! Smiley

That's some really helpful information.

I tried to do this on cruise level and let it run for a while and it worked.

I did notice that when i had total 13% fuel left it started warning about low pressure. In both tank 1 and 3 i had around 1500 fuel left and 2 had around 5800 if i'm correct. I will check again in another flight.
I also received the warning from FSX that my fuel was critically low, so i believe that's causing the low pressure Smiley

at least the screen helped me depleting both 1 and 3 tank and end up with a nearly full 2 tank Smiley

Best regards,

Edwin

Hi Edwin.

Glad I could help. The main thing to remember here is that you use the fuel in the Tank 2 (center tank) until it reaches the same amount as Tanks 1 & 3 and then close the Fuel Crossflow Valves for engines 1 & 3 and turn on the AFT and FWD Fuel Pumps for engines 1 & 3. From that point each fuel tank is supplying a single engine, tank 1 to engine 1, tank 2 to engine 2 and tank 3 to engine 3.
