757-200 FMC Tutorial

Okay here is a quick and straight forward short flight from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Obviously I would be using B757-200 and take off from KLAX and land at KLAS(Mc Carren Int)

1. You could start by placing your aircraft at one of the gates at KLAX and load up the flight.
This is how the overhead panel looks when you first enter the plane with engines running.(if you want to start from cold dark cockpit you could just press ctrl+shift+F1 followed by shift+m. This would turn off engines and avionics. Auto start by ctrl+E to come back at same configuration. You could read detail startup elsewhere on the web.)

2. First we would do IRS alignment. Start by moving the knobs on top left to align position. followed by pressing other lit switches/knobs in any order or by the order mentioned in the captain sim manual.

3. After a while the top left lights would go black, move the knobs to NAV and press the two yaw damper switches below them. FOrgot to switch on Seat belts and stuff  Tongue Now you're all set to configure your fmc

4. Access your CDU/FMC from the panel on bottom left corner by pressing CDU. There might be some data from previous flight, ignore it and hit LSK button (line select key) "TWICE" next to pos init(see circled mark in the screenshot below) and you would reach where CDU is asking for flight plan.

5. I'll make a short simple flight plan(create more complex ones for free at http://simroutes.com/. Download flightplan in FSX format and import it as described in the following steps). Goto fsx flightplanner and make a plan as shown in the diagram below. Hit Find Route

6. Change the Cruising altitude to 25000 and save the route to some name for eg. KLAXKLAS.

7. Once you do that fsx would ask you the following question. Since i started at KLAX i donot want to move so i hit no. and come out of it.

8. Back to CDU! hit lsk next to REQUEST SEND. It would show you existing flight plans but We want to pick a plan we just created so we access it via FLTSIM FPLS.

9. Select KLAXKLAS, the one we just created.

10. once done, you would be presented by following situation

11. Hit LSK next to Actiate and  EXEC would light up. YOu could hit it to activate the route.

12. By hitting DEP/ARR button you could enter SID/STAR procedures for departure and arrival. You could skip this if you fly just for fun.

13. I've selected runway 24L and arrival at KLAS on ILS25L via STAR CLARR. note the <SEL> and <ACT> next to the selected STAR. I hit EXEC to activate changes.

14. You could hit the left lsk4 to SAVE the route in captain sim flightplan format.

15. On EFIS set the HSI knob to PLAN and Range to 20 to zoom in HSI

16. Having set the above you could not step into each leg of your flight plan and join the broken paths. Hit step on CDU to step to next leg and so on...

17. You might want to correct approach by removing a few legs for nice turn etc...Check elsewhere on the net how to fix broken routes, its easier than you think

18. Switch EFIS back to MAP view and hit INT REF on CDU. This would take you to the crazy weight page which we all passionately hate Smiley, especially if you're coming from other commercial models. Go to fuel and payload from top menu in fsx. select "Display fuel quantity as weight". This would change all units to Pounds(lbs). Calculate the ZFW as shown in the figure below. You could change fuel and payload etc. As you could see i've way too much fuel but thats alright we'll be burning only digital fuel.


More realistic figures would be something like Cargo + PAX = 31500, Fuel = 50% in all tanks which gives around 37775lbs.

Gross Weight = (empty plane's weight + cargo+pax+fuel)
                   = 115000 + 31500 + 37775
                   = 184275lbs

ZFW = 184275 - 37775 = 146500lbs

so you would enter 146.5 in ZFW which would give you 184.3 in GR WT in CDU

You could also approximate CG here from the diagram. The black and white circle is located at 12th or 13th notch from top (depending on how you read it). So CG% would be (13/32)x100 = 40.625 = approximately 41%.






19. Enter 128.2(round it off) into ZFW and it would automatically calculate GR WT 199.4 which is approximately what we had in previous screenshot. Enter reserves to 20, crz alt to 250, cost index to 110(this is for how economical you want your flight to be. Higher the number more fuel would be burnt etc ..... This would be crucial for longer flights.)

20. Hit takeoff lsk on previous CDU step and enter following circled figures. CDU would automatically calculate V speeds for you

21. BUt you've to hit each lsk buttons next to v1, vR, v2 to finalize them(see the speeds are in BOLD below). I've entered CG approx to 34. It was around 40 i checked later. YOu could see this visually on FUEL and payload screenshot. Anyhow this has to do with trim settings so here i got 4 but i think 3 was enough for my flight.

22. Set the trim to 4 as we calculated in CDU.

23. We're almost done Do rest of the following as shown below. F/D on, A/T on, IAS/MACH to vR(140), ALT to next waypoint(I didn't bother here), Flaps to 15, EFIS HSI to MAP.

24. For auto take off hit TO/GA(below autopilot disengage switch) and EPR(below A/T Arm). Try to keep aircraft centered as the plane starts moving using rudder and joystick.

25. Here's tower view of the take off as I retract the landing gear.

26. Once above 200ft above ground Hit LNAV, VNAV, CMD switch followed by gradual flaps retraction(see manual). As we climb you could hit CLB button(next to TO/GA button, but make sure to hit CRZ button under CLB once you're on level flight)

27. Okay now we're approaching Vegas so its time to set ILS frequncies. Goto map from fsx menu and double click on KLAS airport to bring up airport information. You could get all required frequencies here ATIS, Approach etc.. Here ILS frequency for our rwy is 111.70 and CRS heading 255

28. So we enter these figures into radio panel where it says ILS

29. Near Finals we're ready to enter Approach reference speeds. I select flaps 25 and vREF to 133kts by hitting second LSK from right to copy and hitting right LSK 4 to paste.

30. Once we intercept the ILS needles hit LOC followed by APP before the horizontal pink diamond marks on ADI on right is above centerline. If you delay the autoland won't work!

31. Here I'm fully configured to land. See the circled areas and try to match with figures in CDU we calculated. LAND 3 is illuminated green and we've three green for wheels. Auto breaks and flaps are all set including the speed. At this point all Autopilot switches would come alive on their own

32. Time to disconnect autopilot, auto throttle and start flaring

33. Came down bit heavy as you remember I overloaded plane with lots of fuel Smiley

34. Taxi to the gates and enjoy rest of the neat features in Captain Sim's plane. stay good in Vegas!

Aussie,

I ran ino into a few questions....when I create a FP via SimRoutes  a Huhnd import that FP into the FMC it does not show any SIDS or STARS ("none") and my waypoints are listed by lat and long coordinates, not by name..... Huh  hmmm?  Could you help?

You're correct I just checked this issue. Simroute is an old site without recent update. The problem is fsx accepts flight plans in xml file format but simroute, generates flat file format. One could write a small program to convert from one format into another but not sure if its that worth!

btw simroute can create flightplan with SID and STAR if you goto Generate Routes   link but you've to manually enter other waypoints for the route itself or copy paste the route from (http://rfinder.asalink.net/free/ ) and select your choice for given SID and STAR options....works fine for other aircraft lvld 767etc

I would suggest the following tweak to your tutorial. Select the Oshnn departure from KLAX, with the DAG trans then the CLARR arrival RW25R. You can get semi-accurate real world flight plans from www.flightaware.com

For your upper tutorial what Version u used : 4.1 or 4.2
Would be interessted for me because if you using 4.2
it looks like you didn`t get the RAM Turbine Issue as i can see
on the shots off your Overhead panel and for shure the shots
from the Plane in outside view.

Aussie, I programed the CDU and pressed the lsk next to V1, Vr V2 to finalize in FMC.




When I select the arr runway on the approach ref page the gross land weight is blank. Cannot manually enter the weight to obtain Vref speeds. I thought the FMS auto calculated the landing weight. I must be missing a step in order for the landing weight to appear. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi, thanks for the tutorial it solved the Centre of Gravity calculations for me!  I enter the gross weight into the FMC and the FMC calculates the ZFW! Its the other way round but works!

I use the Just Flight 757 CS DVD rom version. Just awaiting the much hinted at patch that will (please) address some issues like no VOR deviation indication in the HSI VOR and no weather radar (just a "TEST" message!)

Hope the patch will make this a superb sim rather than just a good one Wink

Hey thanks for the tutorial!  I have just one question though.  When you found the CG you found it to be 13 notches back from the firewall (or whatever the 757 uses).  Then you took 13 and divided it by 32.  Is that because there are 32 notches total and you just divide what your CG is by 32?  What if it had been 17?  Would it still be 17/32 x 100?

Hi Guys,
New to this bought Capt Sim 757 on dvd and followed above I tried EGCC to LEMG on the runway press ga/to EPR the thrust is set but nothing happens I have set the flaps as well is there anything I might have done wrong  Huh

The FMC errors may be fixed in the next service pack, if one comes, which they can not confirm or deny that it will and can not confirm or deny what it will fix nor can they confirm or deny when it might possibly come out, if ever.

Same here.

However it works fine in Fs9.


I just had the same trouble then I found this post. What fixed it for me was to delete the many FLT plans I had in my documents\flight sim x files\ , and just save the one that I was using for that flight. All was well and it shown up in the FMC with just 1 flight plan to choose.

I have dozens or more saved FPs, but my FP save file names are very short (6-7 characters) which involve a 3-letter designation for the hoplist I'm using and a 3-4 number designation for the flight number from that hoplist.

I.E. for UGT Hop 306, the plan is named "UGT306".  I find it tedious to try and find the correct hop in the FMS when using the default FS Planner names like "IFR Someplace to Someplace Else" because it's rare to find the second name due to character limitations in the CDU screen.

Maybe it's related to too many and/or too long of a name?

I don't have the 3 panels above the yaw damper switches. There is just a blank space where the align knobs panel should be. Any Idea how to fix that? I'm running FSX on XP with 757 pro pack v4.2

Captain Sim 2 - as a follow up..you are right. FSX SP2 was not installed.  Everything is fixed. Thank you for the prompt assistance.  Now I'm off to figure out the FMS on this wonderful 757 aircraft.

Semi-accurate would be a good choice of words. I was looking at flights from San Diego to Las Vegas and the majority of flights were listing 'KSAN PEBLE3 SXC LAX DAG KEPEC2 KLAS' as the flight plan. But when you look at the actual route taken, you can tell that they were following 'KSAN LNSAY2 FALCC SLI POM DAG KEPEC2 KLAS' which some flilghts did list as their plan. But the kicker was when I looked at the details of the second flight plan, the waypoints for the first flight plan were shown  Undecided

But overall, that site does help me in understanding real world flight paths.

I believe flightaware is accurate. They are showing you the filed flight plan and then also the actual flight path. The reason they might be different is ATC.

This tutorial is very good. I'm getting through step 11 okay but at step 12 I can't get to the departure part. I think I'm not understanding how to get from arr to dep. Maybe I'm missing a button press where it talks about sid/star...I'm kind of confused about that section.

If you're not close enough to the arrival airport, click the DEP/ARR button, then hit the Index left side key.  This will take you to the page you need to tell the FMC about your arrival at the destination airport (instead of returning to origin)

So is there any web based route builder that allows you to save in the correct format for the 757? I don't mind typing in the routes manually, but it would be nice to avoid that with the very long routes.

Nothing to do with this,but where did you get the Delte plaine with winglets,i have the latest cs for fsx but i can't find a plaine with winglets Undecided

You know you can type your route directly into the MCU using airways, and all the waypoints will be automatically put in.  Then you can save the route as a company route for 757 (although it won't be available as an FSX route).  Saves a lot of typing because you don't have to put in each waypoint.

SKBO SID ABL UL423 ISEBA UG440 LIB UG436 AUR UA552 MTT UJ5 MEX STAR MMMX

"SKBO" is Bogota's airport, SID is whatever SID you want to use, if any, and "ABL" is the first waypoint after that.  "UL423" is an airway that will have a number of waypoints, but you just type in the airway as the via, and "ISEBA" as where you're getting off of it.  Same with the other stuff until you get to MEX, then whatever STAR, and Mexico City!

A lot easier than typing in twenty or more separate waypoints.

Even better is 100 free plans for FSX so you don't have to type at all.

I highly recommend World's 100 Busiest Airports package which is a free download from a newer company that is known for its MD-80 Smiley  Wolfgang Schroeder is the author I believe.  (The example I used above comes from it.)  It has plans ready for installation, and also a trip booklet with the route, other info and a map.  It is ideal for the 757.  Start in Sao Paulo and work your way around the world, trying out every livery that's available.

Excellent tutorial...this has helped me immensely.

One question--how does the approach speed get in the MCP window?  Is this automatically set once APP mode is engaged?  Reason I am asking is that you seem to be on an awfully short final, but your speed was showing 234 knots.  I find myself going to SPD mode and setting the Vref in the window manually.

I have a problem with the FMC and flight plans.  I will explain the process that I use and tell me if anything I do is wrong.  The problem is the departure (SID).  I take off and fly the SID fine, but in the FMC, it says ROUTE DISCOUNTINUTY, even though from the finishing point of the SID I have a waypoint that is Direct from the finishing point of the SID to the next waypoint.  So here is what I do: 1) I go to this site (http://rfinder.asalink.net/free/) and I use the route it provides to me.  2) I manually enter the route into the FMC. (first loading the whole route and then SID and STAR).  3) I fly the SID, but the FMC says route discontinuity though I programed a direct route from the ending point of the SID to the next waypoint (it is DIRECT).  ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!  Thanks!

you've to manually slow down speed. Cannot transfer speed to MCP as far as I remember(unless you press VNAV then it would pick from FMC)
Yes my approach speed is bit high at that point but that point is where i'm trying to intercept localizer but right at runway threshold my speed is close to what i calculated . You basically show down as you come down the glideslope extending flaps. Cheers Wink

I think you're using FS9 version. perhaps a bug? are you still getting same issue. Has anyone else using FS9 version got same issue?

hi, thanks for making this tutorial, it is great to have people like you who can help others, just one thing to ask, my autopilot worked fine but when my computer crashed i had to reinstall every thing including CS757, i did and installed the update from the another company website and now my auto pilot goes nuts!!! it banks from side to side and stalls the aircraft by pitching up to much! Sad

Aussie, What am I doing wrong? I purchased 757 Captain and I can't get the autopilot to work. I've owned FS since the beginning in all the iterations. I have no problem with A/P in the 737 and 747 that com with FSX but this 757 has me questioning I have a bad disk. Example; IRS, I click Align in all 3 columns and wait till the light in each goes out, then I switch to NAV in all 3. Then the 3 Align start flashing, is that normal. When in flight while I'm straigt and level and at cruising speed I try to switch on Alt/Hold and Heading/Hold and they don't work, the plane usually goes into a bank and then dive? I also don't know when to flip the F/D switch(usually right away) but again, in the dark. I know this is probibly tedious for you but could you possibly help me or direct me towards something that will show me the proper procedure for using the autopilot for this "Just Flight 757 Captain program. Thank you for your time.

To stop the IRS from blinking, enter the aircraft position in the CDU, using the pos init page. This should stop them from blinking. Also, make sure your yaw dampers are active (and working). I don't have the probs you describe, and I'm certainly not a specialist, but maybe that could help.

Your IRS isn't aligned. The flashing "ALIGN" lamps indicate a fault.

Try this:

1) APU = ON ; Engines = OFF
2) Set IRS from "OFF" to "ALIGN" (all 3 columns). Wait for it to set.
3) Go to CDU/FMC. Choose "POS INIT". Copy your last known LAT/LONG to the scratch pad by hitting the button on the TOP RIGHT and then paste that in where it says something like "SET IRS POS"
4) Now - switch IRS from "ALIGN" to "NAV"

You should no longer get the flashing ALIGN lights. Now it should be set!

Did you pull back on the stick?

Anyhow, good tut except, according to a normal ops checklist I have, you don't engage LNAV until 400' AGL.  You also don't engage VNAV until 1000' AGL.

You have to set the correct CG value in the FMS (center of gravity). Then the plane will rotate and takeoff without pulling the yoke.

When I press "Yaw Damper", the left is on ON, while del right one, is on ON but the orange light of INOP is still Light.

I'm not sure if this will help with the plan showing in the FMC. I always turn the IRS Mode Selectors knobs straight to the NAV position and not the ALIGN position. The alignment works fine for me doing it this way.

Everything is working perfect for me except that the runway isnt showing up as the final point on my FMC. I cant get the approach to setup on there. I have the STAR and runway selected it just want mark them as waypoints. Does anyone know what Im doing wrong?

Hello.

I downloaded version 4.4, and I have a problem with the ILS, I can not tune or automatically (FMC) or manual.

I have to say that the route into the FMC is well programmed, but when you start the approach to runway ILS I have no signal.

As a curious thing, I have to say that on the ground and before aligning the IRS, if you can tune the ILS frequency.

From what I have found, when you are on the arrival page of the FMC, you will have 3 choices. STAR, Runway, and Transition, you have to add all 3. If you don't add the transition, the arrival will not show on the flight plan.

Fantastic tutorial, certainly has helped me master most of the stuff with regard to the FMC, however, where can I learn more about SIDS and STARS. I seem to be missing something and wind up flying in circles on the final bit of the approach. Eventually I go in the good old fashioned way by locking my nav radio onto the ILS and flying in that way. How and where to find ways to change this please?

Hi Lee.

If you are flying around in circles instead of capturing the ILS/GS, then I need to know if the end of the route is missing. Looking through the LEGS page, does the route end where the STAR should begin? This could explain the problem.

Another question. Are you wanting to change from one STAR and Runway (which can happen when using real weather like REX or AS2012) to another when using real weather? If that's what you want to do, I usually have the RTE1 copied into RTE2 and I change the STAR and Runway in there and then Activate RTE2. If you are in the middle of the STAR, then switching to RTE2 might end up wanting to turn you back, 180 degrees, to the start of the STAR in RTE2. It is best to use Heading HOLD when switching from RTE1 to RTE2 (and vice-verse), then make any changes in the LEGS page that might be needed prior to turning LNAV back on.

Yes, I do use real weather, my routes are joined i.e. my STAR is joined at my last waypoint before the airport on the route. I suspect i'm fluffing it with transitions etc. I'm not sure, at least I'm getting the hang of FMC flying.

This is a VERY GREAT and helpful tutorial! Can anyone tell me how I could get access to getting the SIDS and STARS for my routes to put in my FMC , how do you all get this info?  Smiley I am VERY new to Capt. Sims aircraft and I am HIGHLY interested in getting to know and understanding how to operate and fly the Capt Sim aircraft much better, since it is the most complex simulator aircraft out! I use Flight Sim Commander 9 to get the SID, STAR, Transitions, and to help figure out the High Altitude Airways with connecting waypoints.

You can try RouteFinder (free version) to create routes for you. You will have to figure out the SID STAR, which can be difficult though (FSC9 comes in handy for finding the correct SID and STAR).

Yes it will work, but you cannot save the Flight Plans. I'm not sure what other features are unavailable in the demo. I saw a post by someone who only used the demo version (for a very long time) and he was very happy with it. It doesn't work within FS. It is a separate program, but the database is gathered from FS9, FSX and/or P3D. Mine is set for both FSX and P3D (I have a shortcut to open it for whichever Flight Sim version I'm using at the time).

As I said before, I only use FSC9 (currently v9.2.2) to provide me with the info needed (jet airways with linking waypoints AND SID, STAR and TRANS) to enter in the route. So on long routes, I have a lot of jet airways and waypoints to enter, but it is definitely better than adding every single waypoint.

I use FSX in Windowed mode, never Full Screen, so I just click on FSC9 in the Taskbar. The ILS frequency should be added automatically upon selecting an ILS runway in the ARR screen.

I have also added the default GPS 500 in the CS757! I removed the Simicon (SHIFT+2) for the iYOKE and replaced it with the default fs9gps!gps_500. Like this:

In the FSX\SimObjects\Airplanes\CS_B757-200\panel folder.

1. Backup the panel.cfg before modifying it!
2. Open the panel.cfg with Notepad.
3. Search for Window37. When you find this: Window37=Yoke, replace it with this: Window37=GPS
4. Search for [Window01] (in the [ ]), and change gauge04 from this: gauge04=Captain_Sim.200!iYoke,    0, 128, 24, 32 to this: gauge04=SimIcons1024!GPS Icon,    0, 128, 24, 32
5. Search for Window37 again, and when you reach the [Window37] (in the [ ]), replace this:

I know I'm of the dummies' tribe, but I can't understand why ev'rytime I insert a Route in the FMC and follow the procedures in inseting data, it's always missing the landing path (or the path from the last leg to de STAR point and Runway. I mean, my route is correct from takeoff to the last leg. I act in the same way on the another company 737 and it works perfectly. Do I miss some point on the Captain Sim FMC? I tried on the 757 and 767 with the same result. It's frustrating.

It's a bug. If you take a look at my fixes for the same problems in 767 FMC...

Fix for missing T/D in CDU/FMS

Fix for missing end of route.

They will also work for the 757 FMC. Wink

These fixes can sometimes take a few tries to get them to hold, so if you persevere, you will get there in the end.

Are there any good flight planners for the 757?  I see PPFX claims support, but it's not working or not implemented.  I need to do NAT planning that has an updated nav database.

I use both PFPX and FSC9 to plan routes. Because neither of them save to the Captain Sim .rt format, I tend to enter the route manually. Sometimes I export/save the routes created in these programs to FSX .pln format and load them into the FMC. If I'm going to load them, I don't normally export/save them with SID or STAR/Approach, I add them using the FMC.

You need reach 50 posts before you'll be able to create a new topic. Wink

Thanks, I tried rfinder for say KJFK to EGLL.  It created a good enough FP and I  modified it in notepad to FSX format (comparing to an existing FP that FSX generated JFK to EGLL via Alasak!).  Then in CDU I tried to load it, but it doesn't do anything.  I have another FP that loads ok in CDU.

As you can see, it is very different, and whereas FSX can read/load/use te FS9 PLN format, the CS 757 v4.x FMC/CDU only loads the FSX PLN format. That's why it didn't work. If you had loaded the plan/route manually, it will work (unless a waypoint is not listed in the FMC/CDU database). Wink

ok thanks for the information.

The other day I loaded a FSX Flight plan  fine and modified it and clicked save in CDU, then today I went to load it and FSX proceeded to crash.  I also tried it in 767 CDU and it did same thing.  I think FSX crashed six times before I finally got one to load ok. 

It seemed like the only thing that worked 100% of the time was to start from square 1 every time. Kind of frustrating to have to do that, but I know it works.

It seemed like the only thing that worked 100% of the time was to start from square 1 every time. Kind of frustrating to have to do that, but I know it works.


simroutes.com is somehow generating a FS9 plan even though FSX is selected when you click on Route Generation (copy route from flightaware and paste into simroutes flight generation).

To FSX, it doesn't matter because it's backwards compatible. The 757 FMC is not. My advice is to open the route with the default FSX Flight Planner, then re-save it. When it is re-saved, it will be saved in the FSX PLN format, and THEN you will be able to load into the 757 FMC. Wink

Hi:

My problem is that when approaching destination and go to the arrivals menu in the fmc, wether I choose star first and then ILS app, or the other way round, and validate with the exec button, nothing happens. No route is drawn in the MFD, nor any new waypoints appear on the leg page of the FMC. Same for 767

I don't know if this was already answered here, but I havent found it.

I wrote these two fixes for the Captain Sim 767, but they work for the 757 as well.

Fix for missing T/D in CDU/FMS

Fix for missing end of route.

In my personal experience, the fix for the missing T/D usually takes a few more attempts to get it to work, but it still works. And sometimes, doing the fix for the missing end of the route, will then create the missing T/D problem, so I end up doing both fixes for the one flight.

Hi, Apologies if this is a silly question, but I've been having a little trouble with setting up an approach for landing.

I've been flying from Edinburgh EGPH to Nice LFMN with a flight plan created using onlineflightplanner.org

Programming the FMC, takeoff, climbing and cruising went well but I can't work out how to set up the approach properly.  My last waypoint is VEVAR so I've set up the FMC as follows: ILS Runway 4L, VEVA6R STAR, MUS Trans

I've tried deleting some of the waypoints to give a smoother route into the runway, but the plane doesn't follow the updated route and goes off in the wrong direction.

Selecting a different Transition gives me an even crazier route:

I'm probably doing something wrong or missing a step, but does anyone have any idea where I'm going wrong?

Was the arrival runway a default FSX airport, or a 3rd Party Addon airport? I only ask because the landing gear for the 757 never sinks into the pavement for me, yet a 3rd Party Addon airport might explain why it happened. Undecided
