"Heavy Designation"

Am I correct to say that the 752 is not designated "heavy", but the 753 is?

That is correct.  Although the 752 creates the same degree of wake turbulence that a heavy jet does, it does not fall under the category of "heavy", which constitutes a weight of 255,000lbs or greater.

Thanks Brandon!!

If I remember correctly, the degree to which the 757 made wake turbulence was a bit of a surprise... I seem to remember something on the news about it in the early eighties.

Hi,
I read somewhere:
757-200: wake turbulence -> heavy, MTOW less than 255LBS -> medium
757-300: wake turbulence -> heavy, MTOW more than 255LBS -> heavy

But: ATC designates all 757-types as heavy aircraft because of the wake turbulence (->safety of aircrafts behinde the 757).

I'm not sure if this is 100% correct.

Dimitri, although ATC "silently" designates the 752 as heavy, they still do not call it heavy.  What I mean by silently is that they have a special set of separation minimums for the 752 that are different from large aircraft (less than 255,000lbs, but more than 41,000lbs), however, similar to heavy aircraft, even though the 752 is considered large.  If I really felt like typing this evening, I'd list all the separation distances and minimums, but I don't.   Wink

Hi
To follow up on Brandons' comments, it is extrememly rare for a 757 to weigh 255,000 lbs, meaning it is nearly never done. Thus ATC will not call a 757 heavy, when calling, but will space you for "heavy" wake turbulence.
